Between 2018 and 2019, a total of 65 elephants lost their lives in railway accidents, according to data shared by the Indian Ministry of Railways. 19 elephants were struck by moving trains in 2016 and 15 in 2017; 26 were killed in train accidents in 2018. In June 2019, five more elephant deaths were reported on railway tracks.
