Does anyone actually like Clubhouse?

A confession: I'm trying — I'm really trying — to grasp Clubhouse's appeal. I spend so much of my life thinking about, and being on, social media. I want to understand why some people are obsessed with the audio-only social app. 

But, for the most part, I find it so...unlikable. I've been actively using it for a couple weeks and every time I've logged on it's been like pulling teeth. Every room I've jumped into feels like an unholy mashup of self-promotion, seminar lecturing, and the mind-numbing prattle that typically fills the ballrooms of professional conferences.

'WandaVision' episode 8 made a strong new case for keeping Disney+

The penultimate episode of WandaVision finally answered one of the series’ longstanding questions by explaining how the Westview hex came into being. The answer was not Mephisto, the Nexus, or Agatha all along: It was Wanda’s unyielding grief manifesting as pure chaos magic. The moments leading up to that explanation are some of the finest emotional beats in the MCU, which is interesting because almost all of them take place between the events of the franchise’s extant films. 

For the first time, Wanda’s behind-the-scenes pain took precedence over the world-changing events of the Avengers movies and the result is a compelling case for watching every single Wanda Maximoff scene in the MCU all over again. The context of Wanda’s repeated traumas, as shown in episode 8, makes both her and Vision more interesting in retrospect, which is frankly a brilliant move for a media franchise that requires its fans to look forwards and backwards to get the complete story. Does anyone actually like Clubhouse?

A confession: I'm trying — I'm really trying — to grasp Clubhouse's appeal. I spend so much of my life thinking about, and being on, social media. I want to understand why some people are obsessed with the audio-only social app. 

But, for the most part, I find it so...unlikable. I've been actively using it for a couple weeks and every time I've logged on it's been like pulling teeth. Every room I've jumped into feels like an unholy mashup of self-promotion, seminar lecturing, and the mind-numbing prattle that typically fills the ballrooms of professional conferences.

Google fires yet another AI ethics lead and we've gotta ask: What's going on over there?

When it comes to artificial intelligence, it seems that Google and ethics don't mix. 

The tech giant is back in the news this week after Margaret Mitchell, who until Friday worked as the lead of Google's Ethical AI team, announced her firing via Twitter. Mitchell's unceremonious canning follows on the heels of Google firing the prominent AI ethicist Dr. Timnit Gebru in December. 

"I'm fired," wrote Mitchell in her short statement.

Amazon's first trailer for 'Invincible,' from the 'Walking Dead' creator, is terrific

As a longtime fan of Robert Kirkman's comic book series Invincible, I have two pieces of advice for you newcomers as the first trailer for Amazon Prime Video's animated series adaptation surfaces.

First: read nothingNothing. This trailer behaves itself. It doesn't give too much away. But there are massive spoilers tied to the comic, and presumably the Amazon take as well. My second piece of advice is to get hype. I adored these comics, beginning to end. And while it looks like this series takes some liberties, it also looks like it's remaining faithful to the bits that count.

Twitch dubbed over Metallica stream, and the internet thinks that's a shame

You just hate to see it. 

The Amazon-owned streaming platform Twitch made a mess of things Friday during a livestream, and it couldn't have happened to a nicer band. Specifically, Metallica, known for (among other things) its 2000 lawsuit against the music-sharing service Napster, was streaming a concert for Blizzard Entertainment's annual news event, BlizzCon, when Twitch Gaming dubbed over the heavy metal with what sounded like elevator music.

Endangered ferret is cloned from a long-dead ferret

Meet “Elizabeth Ann."

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced Thursday the successful birth of a cloned black-footed ferret. Scientists cloned Elizabeth Ann from a ferret that died 30 years ago. 

This cloning, which can understandably sound Sci-Fi, is an innovative conservation effort. The Fish and Wildfire Service says that all black-footed ferrets alive today are descended from just seven ferrets, meaning there's a glaring dearth of genetic diversity in the endangered population. So adding new genes to the gene pool, by resurrecting cells of past ferrets, can introduce fresh genes into the population. Read more...

'Nyan Cat' GIF sells for $600K worth of ether and there's definitely no bubble

A digital cat just sold for an ungodly amount of cryptocurrency. 

Nyan Cat, arguably 2011's hottest cat meme, is back in the news this week following the sale of a digital recreation of the artwork for 300 ether. At the time of the Friday sale, that was worth just under $600,000.

Coinbase says unmasking Satoshi Nakamoto might harm its business

Some things are best left a mystery — at least as far as Coinbase is concerned. 

The San Francisco-based cryptocurrency exchange has been preparing to go public since last year, and in a Thursday prospectus filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) it listed a number of issues that could harm its business. Notably, one of those risk factors is the future identification of Satoshi Nakamoto. 

For the unaware, Satoshi is the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin. Satoshi, whose true identity has never been confirmed, published a 2008 white paper titled "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System" and is believed to hold the private keys to around 1.1 million bitcoin. Over the years there have been various efforts to discover Satoshi's true identity, but as far as anyone can tell they have all come up short. Read more...
