Best Mother's Day gifts: Show mom some love

Mother's Day gifts

Mother figures are the backbone of the world. Yours may be your biological mother, or maybe she's your mother-in-law, your best friend's mom, or simply someone whose motherly instinct has helped you through hard times.

Moms teach you the adulting necessities, give advice even if the problem is your fault, and above all, they put up with your shit and (almost) never complain.

The game plan here isn't just to snag the last bouquet at CVS just so you're not the kid who forgot Mother's Day (but definitely also get flowers). And you don't even need to spend a lot of money. (Peep our list of Mother's Day gifts that cost less than $50 here. Want even more cheap gift ideas? Go here.)

Skip the generic mugs and show your appreciation with a gift picked just for her: Whether it's something to make a part of her life easier, something she's mentioned wanting in passing, or simply something to make her feel like a damn queen, you can't put a price on everything she's done for you, but heartfelt gifts certainly help.

After all, they say "No matter how hard you try, you always end up like your mother." But is that even a bad thing?

Wordle today: Here's the answer, hints for April 29

Wordle game displayed on a phone and a laptop screen.

Happy Friday, Wordlers! Our favorite word guessing game has magically refreshed itself and is awaiting your finest five-letter words. What could today's answer be? We've come up with a few hints and tips to help you along if you get stuck.

If you prefer to just find out the solution, you can scroll to the bottom of this article for April 29's Wordle answer. But if you prefer to work through it yourself, keep reading for some clues, tips, and strategies.

Engineer Josh Wardle originally created Wordle as a gift for his partner (romance!), but the game quickly spread around the world towards the end of 2021. Now thousands of players across the globe play Wordle each day, and it was purchased by the New York Times earlier this year.

Fans have also created numerous clones and riffs on Wordle, such as addictive music game Heardle, and variations like Dordle and Quordle that have you trying to guess multiple words at once. Wordle has also become unexpected content for livestreamers, with TikTok creators broadcasting themselves playing.

Not the day you're after? Here's the Wordle answer for April 28.

What's the best Wordle starting word?

In the strictest sense, the "best" starting word is that day's answer. But for those of us not blessed with magical foresight, we have plenty of ideas to help you formulate a more strategic approach. The basic best practice is to pick a word that includes at least two different vowels, plus some common consonants such as S, T, R, or N.

Dig into the Wordle archive

There's a new Wordle every single day! But if you want more or feel like training up, the entire archive of past puzzles is available for you to play whenever you want.

Is Wordle getting harder?

Wordle isn't getting any harder — it just feels like it sometimes. However, Wordle does have a Hard Mode you can switch on if you're craving more of a challenge.

Why are there two different Wordle answers some days?

Occasionally the Wordle gods will accept two different answers on a single day, even though half the fun is that everyone worldwide has to solve for the same word. This anomaly is due to changes the New York Times made to Wordle after it acquired the puzzle game earlier this year.

Here's a subtle hint for today's Wordle answer:

It's a noun, and also a verb.

Does today's Wordle answer have a double letter?

Nope! All five letters appear just once.

Today's Wordle is a 5-letter word that starts with...

Today's Wordle solution ends with the letter... T!

What's the answer to Wordle today?

Now's your last chance to guess today's Wordle before we reveal the answer!

Is your answer locked in?

The answer to Wordle #314 is...

TRASH.

Today's word is for the internet! Here on The Internet, we love trash — being it, watching it, trashing it. And today's word is a friendly mix of pretty common letters and letter combinations, so hopefully you were able to work it out.

But if you needed a little nudge, there's no shame in that — we still have many more Wordle puzzles ahead of us. Come back tomorrow for more helpful clues and hints!

Everything you need to know about Elon Musk's Twitter purchase

Elon Musk with his arms raised in triumph

Elon Musk is buying Twitter.

The CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and the Boring Company will add another corporate feather to his bejeweled cap, after the social media platform announced Monday, April 25, that it intends to accept the self-described Technoking's approximately $44 billion purchase offer of $54.20 per share.

Th reactions were decidedly mixed.

How we got here

Musk first began buying large amounts of Twitter stock in March of 2022, reportedly failing to disclose his purchases in a timely manner as required by securities laws (getting himself a cool $143 million in the process).

The stock grab was only the latest in what could charitably be described as a complicated relationship between Musk and the social media platform. Over the years, Musk has been charged with securities fraud for "misleading tweets," been taken to court over his Twitter-based attack on a cave diver, and, more recently, proposed turning Twitter's San Francisco office into a shelter for unhoused individuals.

And, it seems that he really wants an edit button.

Musk's Twitter account, which at the time of this writing has almost 84 million followers, is essential to his personal brand. And, having long since dissolved Tesla's PR department, it's also essential to his business.

Musk's completely free and unfettered use of that account has, at various points during the past few years, been slightly threatened — most notably when the terms of a 2018 settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission required him to get pre-approval from Tesla for certain tweets. He appeared to ignore the Twitter-specific terms of that settlement.

When Musk's March, 2022 purchases were eventually disclosed, there was talk of him joining Twitter's board. An agreement for him to do so was even reached in early April, but then, abruptly, Twitter declared that Musk would not be joining the board after all.

Why? Perhaps it had something to do with Twitter board members being limited to owning 14.9 percent of the company.

At the time, Twitter employees were reportedly relieved that Musk would not sit on the board.

What happens next

The road ahead, both for Twitter and for Musk, is a rocky one.

The overly enthusiastic tweeter has posted, and in some cases deleted, numerous polls asking Twitter users what changes should be made to the platform itself. Meanwhile, the New York Times reports that Twitter employees have been left wondering what this purchase means both for the service they work on and their stock-heavy compensation.

The company went so far as to reportedly lock down changes to its product, perhaps, as Bloomberg reports, in order to "keep employees who may be miffed about the deal from 'going rogue.'"

Musk, in the meantime, shared a statement on (where else) Twitter where he shared some of what he hopes to accomplish.

"I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans," he wrote in part.

Nowhere in the statement did the richest person in the world note what appears to be the most obvious reason for his purchase: Now no one can threaten to take away his favorite toy.

And after the transaction goes through, we'll all be playing in his sandbox.

Wordle today: Here's the answer, hints for April 23

Wordle on a smartphone.

It's the best of times, it's Wordle time. A new Wordle puzzle is now live for you to crack your cranium on — and even take your time now that it's the weekend. But if you have errands to run and want help finding the solution fast, here are some hints and tips to assist you.

If you just want the answer without the effort, scroll to the bottom of this article for April 23's Wordle solution delivered straight. But if you'd rather figure it out yourself, read on for some clues, tips, and strategies to help you out.

Though Wordle was originally created by engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner, thousands of players across the world have now adopted the word guessing game as a daily ritual. It even became so popular that it was purchased by the New York Times, while TikTok creators have taken to livestreaming themselves playing.

Several fan made clones and alternate iterations of Wordle have also popped up, including battle royale Squabble, music identification game Heardle, and variations such as Dordle and Quordle that have you trying to guess multiple words at once.

Not the day you're after? Here's the Wordle answer for April 22.

What's the best Wordle starting word?

Unlike a maths equation, there is no single correct answer to what the best Wordle starting word is. However, there are more strategic options, and we have plenty of ideas that can help you choose. For example, try picking a word that includes at least two different vowels, as well as some common consonants such as S, T, R, or N.

Explore the Wordle archive

If you want to spend your entire Saturday working through Wordles, you can bury yourself in the entire archive of past puzzles. Remember to take food breaks though, and maybe get some exercise.

Is Wordle getting harder?

It may feel as though Wordle is getting harder, but we can assure you it isn't. Conversely, if you're finding it too easy, you can turn on Wordle's Hard Mode.

Why are there two different Wordle answers some days?

Though Wordle usually just has one correct solution per day, occasionally two different answers may be found acceptable. This is because of some changes the New York Times made to Wordle after acquiring it.

Here's a subtle hint for today's Wordle answer:

It can be used as a proper noun as well as a regular noun. Still need another hint? Think food.

Does today's Wordle answer have a double letter?

No, they're all unique letters this time around!

Today's Wordle is a 5-letter word that starts with...

Today's Wordle solution begins with the letter O, as in "Oh my god" by (G)-IDLE.

What's the answer to Wordle today?

If you want to guess today's Wordle yourself, now's the time to do so!

The final answer is being revealed now. Ready?

The solution to Wordle #308 is...

OLIVE.

Olives are a species of tree, as well as the name of the fruit they produce. The word is also used as a girl's name, one of the most famous Olives being Popeye's girlfriend Olive Oyl.

Don't feel down if you didn't get it this time — there's always the next one. Come back tomorrow for more helpful clues and hints!

Wordle today: Here's the answer, hints for April 22

Woman playing Wordle on her smartphone while travelling on an underground train.

It's Wordle time! Today's new word puzzle is live and ready for you to stretch your brain on. But if you're a little stuck and need some help, here are some hints and tips to help guide you to the solution.

If you want to bypass the struggle, you can jump to the bottom of this article to get April 22's Wordle solution straight up. But if you prefer to work it out yourself, keep reading for a few clues, tips, and strategies to help you get there.

While engineer Josh Wardle originally created Wordle for his partner, the word guessing game has since become a daily habit for thousands of players across the globe. In fact, Wordle became so popular that it was eventually purchased by the New York Times

Wordle has also inspired numerous fanmade clones and alternate iterations, such as battle royale Squabble, music identification game Heardle, and variations like Dordle and Quordle that have you trying to guess multiple words at once. It has also provided ample content for TikTok creators, because sometimes it's nice to just watch someone solve a problem rather than do it yourself.

Not the day you're after? Here's the Wordle answer for April 21.

What's the best Wordle starting word?

Like snowflakes, every Wordle starting word has its own unique beauty. But if you want to be strategic about it, we have plenty of ideas that can help. One tip is that you should try picking a word that contains at least two different vowels, as well as a few common consonants such as S, T, R, or N.

Explore the Wordle archive

If you want to dive into a sea of Wordles like Scrooge McDuck in his Money Bin, the whole archive of past puzzles is available to play. Maybe set a timer though — you probably have other things you need to do today.

Is Wordle getting harder?

Despite random speculation you may see on Twitter, Wordle isn't getting harder. Though if you are looking for more of a challenge, the game does have a Hard Mode which you can turn on.

Why are there two different Wordle answers some days?

While conventional wisdom states there should only be one Wordle solution on any given day, there are rare days where two different answers will be deemed acceptable. This is due to the New York Times having made changes to Wordle after acquiring it.

Here's a subtle hint for today's Wordle answer:

It's both a verb and a noun. Also, you probably have one in your home.

Does today's Wordle answer have a double letter?

Nope, there are no repeat letters today.

Today's Wordle is a 5-letter word that starts with...

This Wordle answer starts with the letter P, as in "Papa Don't Preach" by Madonna.

What's the answer to Wordle today?

It's your last chance to guess today's puzzle yourself, because here's the answer!

Ready for the reveal?

The solution to Wordle #307 is...

PLANT.

Plants took over more than a few homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, as people missing the great outdoors attempted to bring it indoors. If you're struggling to keep your plants alive, try downloading a plant care app such as Planta to remind you to water your leafy friends.

Don't be sad if you didn't get it — the great thing about Wordle is that there's always another one just around the corner. Come back tomorrow for more helpful clues and hints!

Best sex toys for women: Take pleasure into your own hands

four hands holding vibrators

If Instagram is to be believed, then self-care for women basically amounts to face masks and daily affirmation apps.

Hot take: Sex toys are the ultimate self-care purchase.

Orgasms release oxytocin, the anti-stress hormone that gets you warm and fuzzy when cuddling, while dopamine, a neurotransmitter that regulates sleep, also makes an appearance. It stands to reason, then, that "I need to get laid" is a thing that actually makes sense to say when you're having a rough week.

SEE ALSO: Best vibrators (the good, the great, the orgasmic)

Sex toys allow you to give yourself that needed boost whenever you damn well please, and it's empowering to not have to rely on someone else (though toys are great for spicing things up with a partner, too). Getting to know your body is also key in developing a positive relationship with yourself — the most important relationship you'll ever have.

Not all sex toys are made equally: Your favorite could be an oral sex simulator, your classic wand vibrator, or a fin-shaped toy that lets you use a vibrator in ways you didn't know a vibrator could ever be used. Whatever your preference, there's so much more available to you than those $10 vibrators at Spencer's in the mall.

If you're feeling a little overwhelmed, worry not — we have a handy guide to help you choose a sex toy. And to make the process even easier, we've rounded up some of our favorite toys out there at the moment.

Note: For the purpose of this article, we are looking primarily at toys that are intended for use by people who are assigned female at birth, which means they are recommended with the same enthusiasm for anyone with a vagina regardless of gender identity.

The best online dating sites for geeks, nerds, sci-fi buffs, and more

two people with phones in their hands looking at each other lovingly

Mashable's readers (and writers) are known for being obsessive about the things we love. You may say we kind of geek out about things. Okay, fine, we *are* geeks. Whatever. Geeks are awesome.

But sometimes, awesome can use a bit of assistance in the dating department. Not because there aren't enough geeks out there — how do you think Avengers: Endgame became the highest-grossing film of all time? (Thanks to geeks, that's how.) Dating as a geek requires combing through normies and too much dating through the same group of locals. For women, it can involve a lot of creepy guys who want their manic pixie dream girl. For men, it can involve a lot of simply trying to not be that guy. If you're in the majority of geeks who are a little bit introverted, dating can be hella intimidating.

News flash: Loving sci-fi and being *in love* are not mutually exclusive.

SEE ALSO: Which dating app should you use? This guide can help you figure it out.

We compared the internet's top full-on dating sites, trendy swiping apps, and geek-specific sites to find the ones where geeks can express themselves and find that twin flame. Hidden in millions and millions of users, you could find that person who you can chat with for hours about how bad the Game of Thrones ending was or someone who dreams of the perfect couples cosplay. Maybe you're a geek in the streets and a freak in the sheets — there are plenty of apps where geeks can just find a hookup, too.

What should I consider when choosing a dating site?

What are you interested in finding?: Are you looking for like-minded friends, casual hookups, or do you want to find a serious relationship? Whatever it is that you’re looking for — there’s a site for it, but settling on your expectations is key.

Site popularity: Niche dating sites are great for narrowing down your potential matches — but if there are barely any users, trying to find quality matches can become tedious. Look for a happy medium between your personal interests and site popularity to ensure you have plenty of options.

Security: Dating apps and websites are great — but like everything else online, you have to be careful. If you want to avoid potential catfishing or other scams, look for features like social media integration, photo verification, and the ability to block any unsavory members.

Budget: Do you want to stick to free websites and apps or do you have the budget (and interest) to pay for some extra bells and whistles? You can absolutely get away with opting for free services but a couple of dollars per month to speed up the process might be worth considering.

So what are the best dating sites for geeks?

Our top picks include OkCupid, which prides itself on being extremely gender-inclusive and a space safe for everyone, and Match, which has a tried-and-true algorithm and a huge user base. Geek-specific dating sites that aren't totally outdated and crappy are few and far between, but we were impressed by Gamer Dating.

Read on to discover what else made it into our list, and be sure to hit the gray arrow in the bottom of each card to expand the text and read all of what we had to say. Happy dating, nerds.

Hubble pics reveal the mega comet is wider than Rhode Island

Astronomers measuring Bernardinelli-Bernstein Comet

It looks like a pinprick of light in snapshots, but scientists have confirmed this recently discovered space snowball is the largest comet ever observed, spanning the length of over three marathons.

A team of scientists used the Hubble Space Telescope, an Earth-orbiting observatory shared by NASA and the European Space Agency, to determine that Comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein has a nucleus about 50 times larger than the average known comet. This bright ball of ice, dust, and rock stretches some 85 miles across — more than double the width of Rhode Island — and weighs 500 trillion tons. By comparison, it's more than 40 percent larger than the runner-up.

Researchers say the scale of this comet is significant because it provides a clue about the size range of comets orbiting in the distant outskirts of our solar system. The so-called Oort Cloud is a sphere of ancient, icy objects surrounding the system. NASA says the cloud remains a theory because the comets there have been too faint and distant to be directly observed.

There could be trillions of icy comets in the Oort Cloud. That means Comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein may be just "the tip of the iceberg," David Jewitt, a UCLA astronomer and co-author on the new research, said in a statement. (We hope the pun was intended.)

A giant Chilean desert-based telescope detected the comet in 2014. But it took years of intensive computing to sift through loads of observations and identify the remote object, previously known as C/2014 UN271.

Scientists knew then it was enormous but hadn't confirmed measurements. A team used Hubble to take five photos of the comet on Jan. 8. The new findings were published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters on April 12.

Given how active the comet appears to be despite its great distance from the sun (which heats up and boils particles off closer comets), it's "an amazing object," the study's lead author, Man-To Hui, said in a statement.

"We guessed the comet might be pretty big," said Hui, an astronomer from the Macau University of Science and Technology, "but we needed the best data to confirm this."

"... the tip of the iceberg."

Comets, known for their millions-of-miles-long streaks, are among the oldest objects in the solar system. These icy bodies are leftover from the early days of neighboring planets' formation.

The previous record-holder for largest comet was C/2002 VQ94, with a nucleus estimated to be 60 miles across. Astronomers discovered it in 2002 with the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) project.

Comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein, named after the astronomers Pedro Bernardinelli and Gary Bernstein who discovered it, is approaching the sun from the edge of the solar system at 22,000 mph. Though the imposing boulder has often been described as "headed this way," space is a big place. It will never get closer than a billion miles from the sun, a little farther out than Saturn's orbit. Astronomers say it'll reach that point in 2031.

In short: It's not coming anywhere close to Earth.

The comet is now less than 2 billion miles from the sun, and, in a few million years, will loop back to where it came from in the far-off Oort Cloud.
