'Furiosa' trailer: 'Mad Max: Fury Road' prequel returns to the Australian wasteland

Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa in

The first official trailer for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is finally here, teasing at the origin story of Mad Max: Fury Road's titular Imperator.

Set in a post-apocalyptic Australian wasteland, the film follows a young Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) after she is taken from her home in the Green Place of Many Mothers. Now in the hands of Warlord Dementus' Biker Horde, Furiosa is soon caught in the conflict between her abductors and The Immortan Joe, ruler of the Citadel and Fury Road villain.

Of course, Furiosa is more concerned with surviving and finding her way back home than fighting their war. Unfortunately, anyone who has seen Fury Road will know that Furiosa is unlikely to have a completely happy ending.

This glimpse of Furiosa does appear to rely on CGI more heavily than its predecessor — Mad Max: Fury Road famously preferred practical effects where possible, and was all the better for it. In comparison, Furiosa doesn't look great. But either way, it will probably be an entertaining ride.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will fang it into theatres on May 24, 2024.

Apple Card ends partnership with Goldman Sachs: 3 reasons we saw it comin'

Split picture with Apple Card and Goldman Sachs on phone

Apple dropped Goldman Sachs as its fintech partner, according to The Wall Street Journal. Are we surprised? Not in the least.

Before we dive into the telltale signs of their splintering relationship, let's discuss what we know so far. Citing "people briefed on the matter," WSJ claims that Apple wants to dissolve its alliance with the Wall Street bank in 12-to-15 months.

This disbandment spans across the duo's "entire consumer partnership," WSJ said, including the Apple Card and the Apple Savings Account.

Again, we're far from shocked. We always knew there was trouble in paradise.

3 signs that Apple's relationship with Goldman Sachs was fractured

After launching the Apple Savings Account in April, Apple lured users into its Apple Card lair after dangling an attractive 4.15% interest rate carrot. Before you can set up an account, you must get approved for an Apple Card first.

As someone who has an Apple Card and an Apple Savings Account, dealing with Goldman Sachs has been a headache. And rightly so, Apple may be cautious about continuing its dealings with Goldman Sachs.

1. Reports of Goldman Sachs' shaky customer service

In early June, WSJ reported that some customers had difficulties getting money out of their Apple Savings Account. They claimed that the money seemed to disappear for several weeks after transferring it out.

Fortunately, all of the victims in WSJ's report ended up getting their money back, but only after an abnormally long delay.

According to The Information, Apple's role in the partnership involves designing the iPhone wallet app UI, creating a sleek, titanium card, and other slick features. Goldman, on the other hand, mainly handles customer service, underwriting, transactions, and other bank-like tasks, but apparently, some customers aren't thrilled with Goldman's performance.

It's worth noting that plenty of customers have had positive experiences with the Apple-Goldman Sachs partnership. In fact, in 2021, Apple announced that Apple Card customers ranked Goldman Sachs and Apple Card "No. 1" in customer satisfaction among the mid-sized credit card market.

However, the reported issues that piled up in the media arguably sullied Goldman Sach's reputation.

2. Goldman Sachs is bleeding money

According to a mid-October WSJ report, Apple isn't the only one who is unhappy in this union. "Some senior executives at Goldman want out of what remains of consumer lending—namely, the Apple credit card," WSJ said in part.

On top of that, Goldman revealed that its Platforms Solutions unit, a collection of businesses that includes Apple Card, lost $1.2 billion in just nine months.

"Inside the bank, partners complain that the consumer-lending business has been more trouble than it was worth, and they blame [CEO David Solomon] for Goldman's expansion in the space." WSJ said.

Consequently, Goldman Sachs has been itching to get rid of Apple, according to reports. This brings me to my next point.

3. Goldman Sachs reportedly wanted to dump Apple

In late June, WSJ reported that Goldman Sachs had been chatting with American Express to end its partnership with Apple.

However, this wasn't a secret to Apple. The report revealed that the Cupertino-based tech giant was well aware that Goldman Sachs was aching to jump ship.

Now, it looks like Goldman Sachs' reported hunger for freedom has been satiated. As we mentioned at the outset, Apple is reportedly pulling out of its deal with Goldman Sachs.

This is a total 180-degree spin from just a year ago when Goldman Sachs announced an extension of the partnership through 2029.

It's not clear whether Apple has lined up an issuer to replace Goldman Sachs.

Is the internet bad for mental health? What the latest study really means.

A woman peering over her shoulder with a larger-than-life phone behind her.

You might be confused to see new headlines declaring that the internet isn't bad for mental health.

After all, the U.S. Surgeon General issued a warning this spring that social media poses a profound risk for youth. Last week, a federal court ruled that a lawsuit against major social media platforms alleging that their products harm young users can move forward.

Ever since Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen revealed in 2021 that the company concealed internal research on the negative effects of using Instagram, it's hardly seemed controversial to suggest that certain types of internet engagement can leave people feeling worse.

Just this month, the Wall Street Journal published accusations by another whistleblower who said that executives at Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, ignored concerns that teens were being harassed or experienced unwanted sexual advances on the latter app.

Enter a study published Tuesday by researchers in the journal Clinical Psychological Science, which tried but did not succeed in finding a compelling link between internet access and poor mental health and well-being.

Business Insider, for example, declared that the study found no link between social media use and "mental health harm." Except that's not what the researchers evaluated.

Instead, they contrasted internet access in the form of yearly per capita internet and mobile-broadband subscriptions and various measures of well-being and mental health.

They did not, however, distinguish internet access from certain types of platforms, like social media and gaming.

The researchers did draw on massive data sets. In one set of studies, they pulled figures for internet access and well-being indicators in 168 countries over a 16-year period. In another set of studies, they did something similar across 202 countries and 19 years. They also looked at differences in age and gender in an effort to better understand whether younger or female users might be more prone to negative experiences.

In general, the researchers didn't find a convincing link between internet access and poorer well-being and mental health. Among young individuals there were some minuscule positive and negative correlations between some of the variables, but co-author Dr. Andrew K. Przybylski told Mashable in an email that those findings were hard to interpret.

Przybylski, professor of human behaviour and technology at the University of Oxford, said that he believes the study is the "best evidence" we have on the question of whether internet access itself is associated with worse emotional and psychological experiences — and may provide a reality check in the ongoing debate on the matter.

"Thought leaders and some policy folks claim there is a global mental health epidemic caused by the internet, but they do not bother to collect [and] wrangle data to support this extraordinary claim," he wrote.

Importantly, he and his co-author noted in their paper just how difficult it is to study the problem because the crucial data isn't in the hands of researchers but instead belongs to private companies who use it to refine their marketing strategies. (Przybylski has served as an unpaid consultant to Meta and previously published research on the association of Facebook adoption and well-being in dozens of countries.)

The authors also wrote that further investigation of the relationship between online behaviors and well-being requires studying those activities where they occur, including on social media platforms.

Przybylski told Mashable that people should be able to securely, ethically, and legally donate the data they generate when they play games, use their phones, or go on social media platforms, similar to how they give permission for researchers to use their genetic, financial, educational, and health data.

This "rich data" is currently used to sell products and ads, Przybylski said, noting that researchers have a diminished ability to study everyday life.

"I am sure that technology use has its ups and downs, but we'll never be able to map this out, and intervene if necessary, if we don't have objective data on how, why, and when people engage with online worlds," Przybylski said.

Best Buy has the top Chromebook deals of Cyber Monday 2023

a top-down view of a man playing

UPDATE: Nov. 27, 2023, 6:33 p.m. EST We've updated this list with the latest pricing and availability of Cyber Monday Chromebook deals at Best Buy.

We're keeping a running list of the best Cyber Monday Chromebook deals at Best Buy as the retailer continues its holiday sale.

Best Cyber Monday Chromebook deals at Best Buy so far:

Best gaming Chromebook deal
the Acer Chromebook 516 GE

When it comes to deals on Chromebooks — and most kinds of laptops, really — Best Buy pulls ahead of the pack during holiday shopping events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Yes, other retailers like Amazon and Walmart will occasionally price-match its deals, and brands' direct websites sometimes have juicy one-off doorbusters that hang around for a few days. But for the most part, everyone else is simply trying to keep up with the tech retailer's discounts.

Case in point: In the lead-up to Black Friday 2023 and still true on Nov. 27, 15 of the 22 great Chromebook deals we've found around the web are exclusively available at Best Buy. (Its sale began a week early on Friday, Nov. 17.) Keep scrolling to peruse a running list of them, and check back often: We'll continue to update this list through Cyber Monday.

Why we like it

Announced in October, Google's new Chromebooks Plus are upgraded Chromebooks with built-in Google apps, Full HD IPS displays, and AI-powered 1080p+ cameras. Best Buy wasted no time in putting some on sale as part of its Black Friday programming, and this Acer model with a 12th-generation Intel Core i3 CPU, 8GB of memory, and 128GB of storage is the only one that comes in under $300. (Those are some pretty decent specs for that price point.)

2-in-1 Chromebook deals at Best Buy

Why we like it

It runs on an old MediaTek CPU with only 4GB of RAM, only has 64GB of slow eMMC storage, and it's kind of a clunker. But convertible Chromebooks don't get any cheaper than this Acer Chromebook Spin 311, which Best Buy is selling for only $129 (or 24% off — Acer's website lists it for $169.99); it's actually the cheapest laptop deal of Black Friday 2023 thus far, aside from a $79 in-store doorbuster at Target that's sold out. Bargain hunters who just need a basic laptop for everyday browsing, email-sending, or occasional YouTube-watching need not look any further.

Gaming Chromebook deals at Best Buy

Why we like it

Featuring a 120Hz display, an RGB backlit keyboard, and more power than you'd usually expect from a Chromebook, last year's Acer Chromebook 516 GE is "uniquely suited to let you get into high-end PC gaming with a fraction of the hardware usually required," said the experts at our sister site, PCMag. (They gave it a 4/5 "Excellent" rating and an Editor's Choice Award). The model with a 12th-gen Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage is on sale at Best Buy for $449, or 31% off.

A few years ago, those cheap electric "hoverboards" were dominating holiday gift guides. Then it was massage guns. Now, pizza ovens are the must-have "it" gift of the year, and we're not mad about it. In fact, we're loving the bougie pizza oven trend, because who couldn't use more pizza in their lives? That's a rhetorical question.

There is one downside to all these new pizza ovens: The best indoor and outdoor pizza ovens are really expensive. From Oprah-approved brands like Ooni to more familiar brands like Cuisinart and Breville, some popular pizza ovens cost $1,000 or more. And that's exactly why we're so excited about Cyber Monday pizza oven deals. We've been hard at work collecting all of the year's top Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales for Mashable readers — deals on robot vacuums, discounts on new TVs, exclusive invite-only deals for Prime members, and now pizza ovens.

We've been watching our favorite pizza ovens closely for price drops, and we have good news and bad news. The good news: as we approach Cyber Monday, you can find big $200 discounts on popular pizza ovens from top brands. The bad news? Some of our favorite outdoor pizza ovens haven't gone on sale yet. Sadly, that includes most Ooni ovens, which are the pinnacle of pizza party perfection.

Keep checking back as we find new Cyber Weekend deals on pizza ovens and add them here. And if you want to save some cash on one of the year's most popular Christmas gift ideas, then check out the selection of savings below. To make life easier, we're splitting these discounted ovens into high-end picks ($500 and above) and more affordable pizza ovens.

Why we like it

We recently tested the top pizza ovens of the year, and we named this Breville the best of the best. Most new pizza ovens are designed for outdoor use, but there are a handful of new indoor pizza ovens that make it even easier to host a pizza night. Even though this is a countertop pizza oven, it can still reach blisteringly high temperatures of 750 degrees. That means you can cook pizzas faster than in a traditional oven, but also that they'll be more like the wood-fired pizzas you'd find at a restaurant.

Why we like it

Like the Breville oven featured above, this outdoor pizza oven is Mashable tested and approved. You can cook pizzas in this oven using either propane or wood pellets, and it can reach temperatures as high as 950 degrees. And unlike some popular pizza ovens, you don't have to blast your budget to smithereens just to cook homemade pizzas in the backyard. Outdoor pizza ovens are a great gift for dads or the whole family, and this truly is one of the best.

Cyber Monday is well known for tech deals, but that's definitely not all the mega shopping holiday has to offer. Home and kitchen deals, particularly on big-named brands, also see all-time low prices at this time of year.

On our deal hunt this Black Friday season, we've found some truly impressive deals on the Instant Pot, a kitchen staple for the past few years — not to mention, other small appliances under the Instant brand umbrella. While Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and other retail giants have Instant Pots, Instant air fryers, Instant coffee makers, and more for record-low prices, the best deals on bigger purchases (over $149) are actually at the Instant Home website.

We've done the grunt work for you and rounded up all of the best deals on Instant Pots and other gadgets under the Instant brand name. If you don't see the specific model you're looking for, check back regularly. We'll update the list with all of the best deals that roll in throughout the week.

If you're in the market for a big Instant Pot purchase over $149 (that would include the Instant Pot Pro, Instant Pot Duo Crisp, Instant Pot Rio, Instant Pot Duo, etc.), head over to the Instant Home website for a major sitewide Black Friday sale. While Amazon and other retail behemoths have significant discounts available on top-rated products, it's hard to beat the 40% off deal the brand itself is offering. A word of caution, though: some of the top products are already selling out, so you'll want to act fast.

Why we like it

Introduced in the summer of 2022, the Instant Pot Duo Crisp with Ultimate Lid offers a lot of bang for your buck — not to mention, its the Ninja Foodi's biggest competition. The 13-in-1 design allows for pressure cooking, air frying, roasting, slow cooking, bread proofing, and more, all at the touch of a button and all under a single lid. Note that the only other Instant Brands gadget that proofs bread is the Precision Dutch oven, which can't pressure cook. At $149.95, it's down to its lowest price ever at Amazon, which it reached just once before on Prime Day. However, if you take advantage of the 40% off sitewide deal at Instant Home, you'll get it for even cheaper — just $119.97.

Cyber Monday Instant air fryer deals

Why we like it

Big enough to basically replace your oven, but small enough to fit on your countertop, the Instant Omni Pro is certainly a force. It's designed with air frying and convection oven functionalities, so it can achieve much crispier results than your traditional oven. With a 19-quart (18 liters) capacity, its big enough to bake a 12-inch pizza or roast a four-pound rotisserie chicken. It can also broil, dehydrate, reheat, toast, and slow cook. Usually, it's a bit of a commitment at $299.95, but for Black Friday, you can snag it for $149.99 at Amazon, Best Buy, or Walmart. That's its lowest price to date.

Note: It's currently sold out at the Instant Home website.
