Airbnb now lists buildings that allow tenants to sublet their apartment short-term

The Airbnb app seen displayed on a smartphone screen with the Airbnb website displayed on a laptop in the background.

Airbnb is partnering with apartment buildings across the U.S. to curate a list of places that allow tenants to sublet to short-stay renters. Now you can sign a lease knowing that if you end up struggling to pay rent you'll at least be able to list your spare room on Airbnb.

The new Airbnb-friendly apartment program currently includes over 175 buildings in 29 cities, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Houston, Austin, Phoenix, and Miami. Potential long-term renters can browse apartment buildings by location, and sort them by highest rent, lowest rent, or how close they are to downtown.

Like any other property website, Airbnb's long-term rental listings include checklists of amenities, floorplans, and carefully curated real estate photography to help you imagine the type of person you could be if you lived there. Potential renters can contact each individual building's management via Airbnb to ask specific questions, schedule a tour, or if they want to sign a lease.

But unlike other property websites, Airbnb also lists how many nights per year tenants are allowed to sublet the apartment for short stays, which is determined by each individual building. It further includes an earnings calculator potential renters can use to estimate how much they might earn by listing the place on Airbnb. This is adjusted according to the size of the apartment, how many nights per month they intend to rent it, and based on the past year of similar Airbnb bookings.

This income isn't a sure bet, with a lot of assumption and conjecture still involved in the equation. There's no guarantee that the tenant will be able to rent out their spare room at Airbnb's calculated listing price, and it's unlikely that it will actually be booked for every single day it's listed. Still, it's potentially useful for helping potential renters make reasonable estimates.

Some apartment buildings do discourage or prohibit short-stay rentals, so it's good to know this shouldn't be an issue for anyone who finds their long-term rental through Airbnb.

Airbnb has copped a lot of flack for ostensibly contributing to higher rental costs, so proposing renters pay said higher costs by subletting on Airbnb may feel a bit bitter. But rent still has to be paid, and there's a good chance you or your friends have used an Airbnb before regardless of any impact you feel it may have on housing affordability. You are also part of the problem.

There is of course the chance that people will use the Airbnb-friendly apartment program to find places they can sublet full time. In the end, it will be up to the owner to determine what type of tenant they take on.

ICE doxes thousands of immigrants seeking asylum on its website

a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent seen from behind

Thousands of immigrants had their personal information released by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Monday.

On Wednesday, the LA Times reported that 6,252 migrants who said they were escaping torture and persecution in their countries of origin had their personal information published by ICE on the agency's website.

According to the report, ICE claims it accidentally publicly posted the data while carrying out a "routine update of its website." The LA Times says the data includes migrants' names, case statuses, and detention locations. The data was uploaded to a page on the ICE website where the agency normally posts information pertaining to detentions.

The human rights organization, Human Rights First, reached out to ICE as soon as they noticed the data being posted on its website, and the agency worked to delete it shortly after. However, the data was available for approximately five hours.

ICE provided the LA Times with an official statement.

"Though unintentional, this release of information is a breach of policy and the agency is investigating the incident and taking all corrective actions necessary," said an ICE spokesperson.

ICE says it is working to notify both the migrants affected as well as those that downloaded the data. The agency also says it is monitoring the internet for the potential of the data being re-uploaded.

The identity of these individuals is seen as highly confidential, as some of these migrants face threats on their lives. Those included in this incident are seeking asylum from countries such as Iran, China, and Russia.

According to an official from the Department of Homeland Security who spoke with the LA Times, the incident was "embarrassing" and for those affected, possibly even dangerous.

Twitter will no longer enforce its COVID-19 misinformation policy

The Twitter logo seen displayed on a smartphone. The computer model of the COVID-19 coronavirus is displayed as the background.

Twitter is no longer enforcing its COVID-19 misinformation policy, scrapping it less than a month after Space Karen Elon Musk acquired the company. I'm shocked. This is my shocked face.

"As the global community faces the COVID-19 pandemic together, Twitter is helping people find reliable information, connect with others, and follow what’s happening in real time," Twitter's Transparency Center still states. Though that sentence still remains, it is now immediately followed by a new note: "Effective November 23, 2022, Twitter is no longer enforcing the COVID-19 misleading information policy."

Said policy has also disappeared from Twitter's Help Center, unceremoniously discarding important safeguards the platform gradually developed over literal years.

Mashable has reached out to Twitter for comment, which is just a formality at this point considering Musk has fired pretty much everyone who might have responded.

COVID-19 misinformation has been a rampant and dangerous problem throughout the pandemic, with many social media platforms struggling to manage it. As such, Twitter attempted to address the issue by making several updates to its policies, including expanding its safety rules to prohibit tweets that may put people at higher risk of transmitting the coronavirus. Such tweets included encouraging fake treatments, spreading misleading content claiming it was from authorities, or denying expert guidance.

Twitter attached warnings labels to tweets which went against public health experts' advice. It updated its policy to specifically address baseless conspiracy theories that falsely spread a connection between 5G technology and COVID-19. It also began banning users for repeatedly posting COVID-19 misinformation.

Now all of these safety measures are no longer in force, meaning Twitter users ostensibly are free to advise others to cure themselves of COVID-19 by injecting themselves with bleach. (Very important side note: Do not do this.) Musk has also said that Twitter will reinstate all suspended accounts that haven't broken the law or engaged in egregious spam, meaning Twitter could soon be host to countless more spreaders of COVID-19 misinformation.

The swift destruction of Twitter's coronavirus safety measures unfortunately isn't surprising. Musk himself has been known to post tweets flirting with Twitter's COVID-19 misinformation policy, writing that it's "Maybe worth considering chloroquine for C19" and that "Hydroxychloroquine [is] probably better." Neither of these drugs are recommended by health experts to treat COVID-19, with studies concluding that they are ineffective.

Even so, Twitter determined that Musk's tweets somehow weren't in violation of its policy, allowing Elon "the coronavirus panic is dumb" Musk to continue sharing his galaxy-brained coronavirus thoughts with millions of followers.

Clearly, Twitter's COVID-19 misinformation policy wasn't perfect. But with absolutely nothing now in place, the microblogging platform is now in a prime position to sink to previously unexplored depths.

The first trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie gave us a small taste of Chris Pratt's take on Mario and of Bowser's (voiced by Jack Black) quest for world domination. In the second trailer, we get a better look at the characters and the film's plot. And honestly? It looks pretty fun.

'Quordle' today: Here are the answers and hints for November 29

A hand holding a smartphone.

If Quordle is a little too challenging today, you've come to the right place for hints. There aren't just hints here, but the whole Quordle solution. Scroll to the bottom of this page, and there it is. But are you sure you need all four answers? Maybe you just need a strategy guide. Either way, scroll down, and you'll get what you need.

What is Quordle?

Quordle is a five-letter word guessing game similar to Wordle, except each guess applies letters to four words at the same time. You get nine guesses instead of six to correctly guess all four words. It looks like playing four Wordle games at the same time, and that is essentially what it is. But it's not nearly as intimidating as it sounds.

Is Quordle harder than Wordle?

Yes, though not diabolically so.

Where did Quordle come from?

Amid the Wordle boom of late 2021 and early 2022, when everyone was learning to love free, in-browser, once-a-day word guessing games, creator Freddie Meyer says he took inspiration from one of the first big Wordle variations, Dordle — the one where you essentially play two Wordles at once. He took things up a notch, and released Quordle on January 30. Meyer's creation was covered in The Guardian six days later, and now, according to Meyer, it attracts millions of daily users. Today, Meyer earns modest revenue from Patreon, where dedicated Quordle fans can donate to keep their favorite puzzle game running.

How is Quordle pronounced?

“Kwordle.” It should rhyme with “Wordle,” and definitely should not be pronounced exactly like "curdle.”

Is Quordle strategy different from Wordle?

Yes and no.

Your starting strategy should be the same as with Wordle. In fact, if you have a favorite Wordle opening word, there’s no reason to change that here. We suggest something rich in vowels, featuring common letters like C, R, and N. But you do you.

After your first guess, however, you’ll notice things getting out of control if you play Quordle exactly like Wordle.

What should I do in Quordle that I don’t do in Wordle?

Solving a Wordle puzzle can famously come down to a series of single letter-change variations. If you’ve narrowed it down to “-IGHT,” you could guess “MIGHT” “NIGHT” “LIGHT” and “SIGHT” and one of those will probably be the solution — though this is also a famous way to end up losing in Wordle, particularly if you play on “hard mode.” In Quordle, however, this sort of single-letter winnowing is a deadly trap, and it hints at the important strategic difference between Wordle and Quordle: In Quordle, you can't afford to waste guesses unless you're eliminating as many letters as possible at all times.

Guessing a completely random word that you already know isn't the solution, just to eliminate three or four possible letters you haven’t tried yet, is thought of as a desperate, latch-ditch move in Wordle. In Quordle, however, it's a normal part of the player's strategic toolset.

Is there a way to get the answer faster?

In my experience Quordle can be a slow game, sometimes dragging out longer than it would take to play Wordle four times. But a sort of blunt-force guessing approach can speed things up. The following strategy also works with Wordle if you only want the solution, and don’t care about having the fewest possible guesses:

Try starting with a series of words that puts all the vowels (including Y) on the board, along with some other common letters. We've had good luck with the three words: “NOTES,” “ACRID,” and “LUMPY.” YouTuber DougMansLand suggests four words: “CANOE,” “SKIRT,” “PLUMB,” and “FUDGY.”

Most of the alphabet is now eliminated, and you’ll only have the ability to make one or two wrong guesses if you use this strategy. But in most cases you’ll have all the information you need to guess the remaining words without any wrong guesses.

If strategy isn't helping, and you're still stumped, here are some hints:

Are there any double or triple letters in today’s Quordle words?

Three words have letters occurring twice.

Are any rare letters being used in today’s Quordle like Q or Z?

X.

What do today’s Quordle words start with?

H, E, M, and C.

What are the answers for today’s Quordle?

Are you sure you want to know?

There’s still time to turn back.

OK, you asked for it. The answers are:

  1. HOLLY

  2. EXILE

  3. MARSH

  4. COMMA

Score a KitchenAid stand mixer on sale for as low as $221 this Cyber Monday (thanks, Target)

a white kitchenaid stand mixer on a wooden countertop surrounded by an apple pie, plates, and pie-making ingredients

Here's a quick look at the best KitchenAid stand mixer deals of Cyber Monday 2022, all of which were live at 9 p.m. ET on Nov. 28:

Kitchen trends may come and go (see: air fryers' ousting of Instant Pots in 2022), but having a KitchenAid stand mixer on your countertop will always be a flex.

The KitchenAid brand is having a sitewide Cyber Monday sale through the end of the day, which ushers in an unprecedented $250 discount on the new 7-Quart Bowl-Lift Stand Mixer with Redesigned Premium Touchpoints. But home chefs and bakers in search of cheaper buys should do their holiday shopping elsewhere — ideally, Target, which is beating many of the discounts on KitchenAid.com with an exclusive coupon code that takes an extra 15% off small appliances.

Below, you'll find a complete list of the very best Cyber Monday deals on KitchenAid stand mixers and accessories.

Why we like it

The Samsung Galaxy Buds Live are stupid cheap for Cyber Monday — $49

samsung galaxy buds live with case against a blue and white background

SAVE $121: The Samsung Galaxy Buds Live are down to just $49 for Cyber Monday — that's a 71% discount from the usual $169.99 price tag and the lowest price they've ever been by a long shot.

For Cyber Monday, there are discounts that are good, discounts that are great, and some that are just straight-up ridiculous. You can file this absurdly fantastic deal on the Samsung Galaxy Buds Live under the latter.

As of Nov. 28, you can snag yourself a pair of Galaxy Buds Live for only $49 at Walmart — that's $121 off the original retail price and the best price we've ever seen on these buds by a long shot. Just last week, they were sitting at their previous best price of $69, which was already pretty epic. But good old Cyber Monday savings have dropped the price another $20. For comparison's sake, they're sitting at $79.99 at Amazon and $69.99 at Best Buy at the time of writing. I don't even need earbuds or own a Samsung phone and I'm considering adding them to my cart.

The Buds Live are a solid AirPods Pro alternative for the Samsung-loving crowd. They check all the right boxes for wireless earbuds in their price range. Excellent sound quality? Check. Snug fit? Yup. In-app customization options? Of course. They aren't the latest and greatest buds in Samsung's lineup (that honor would go to the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro), but they still hold their own in 2022. The downfalls are the mediocre noise cancellation, so-so battery life, and the occasional discomfort they can cause with long-term wear. According to Mashable tech expert Alex Perry, "the worst thing about the Galaxy Buds Live is the name," which is arguably the least important thing about them.

There's no knowing how long this ridiculous deal will stick around, so our advice is to grab it sooner rather than later. You almost certainly aren't going to find a better price.

One of the internet's favorite large-room air purifiers is under $140 for Cyber Monday

Coway Airmega air purifier in bedroom beside plant and chair

Save $90.70: As of Nov. 28, the popular Coway AP-1512HH HEPA Air Purifier is still at its Black Friday price of $139.29 — a 39% drop from its usual $229.99.

Wanting cleaner air at home doesn't necessarily mean coughing up Dyson PureCool coin. In fact, a lingering Black Friday deal could score you two of the internet's favorite HEPA purifiers for the price of the cheapest Dyson air purifier, even when it's also on sale.

Still holding it down in the aesthetics department against newcomers, the Coway AP-1512HH HEPA Air Purifier has racked up over 16,000 five-star reviews at Amazon since its release in 2019. Grabbing it there for $139.29 makes it yours for $21.70 less than the sale price at Coway's own website.

The simple square design is as clean as the air it pushes out. The four-stage filtration system is complete with a 99.7% HEPA filter, pre-filter, odor filter, and ionizer. On top of the purifier, you'll find intuitive controls like a timer, ionizer button, and fan speed, as well as a pollution sensor light that monitors air quality in real-time. In eco mode, this Coway will turn its fan off when it detects 10 minutes of good air quality levels, then on again after 30 minutes or when it senses uninvited pollutants entering the chat.

Amazon's best Cyber Monday 2022 laptop deals include a bunch of MacBooks and Samsung Galaxy Books

Three laptops featured in amazon's early black friday sale against a blue and pink geometric background.

UPDATE: Nov. 27, 2022, 6:30 p.m. EST This story has been updated with Amazon's latest and greatest laptop deals for Cyber Monday 2022.

Amazon can't compete with Walmart on the extremely cheap (sub-$100) Chromebook front, but it's still one of the absolute best places to find a laptop deal this holiday season.

The retail giant is already rolling out all-time-high discounts on higher-end Samsung Galaxy Books and Apple MacBooks (including Pro and Air configurations from earlier this year) for Cyber Monday. Shoppers in search of a basic Chromebook for kids or school can find plenty of options in the $100 to $300 range, including a couple of ASUS machines that come with free Office 265 or Microsoft 365 subscriptions.

Gaming laptop deals from brands like MSI and Razer haven't hit their stride on Amazon just yet, but we'll be keeping a close eye out for their inevitable appearances.

One important thing to keep in mind as you peruse Amazon's listings is that it loves to mess with laptops' MSRPs (by either inflating or deflating them), often obscuring whether deals are actually good or not. It's a good idea to cross-check prices on direct retailers' websites to make sure you're getting a good deal.

If that all sounds like a lot of work, fret not: We're going through all of Amazon's Cyber Monday laptop deals and picking out everything that's actually worth buying based on true MSRPs and historical data from camelcamelcamel, a price-tracking site we rely on for fact-checking these kinds of things. Apple is not famous for its sales — at least not through its own website and stores. Though its Black Friday and Cyber Monday sale has started, offering customers gift cards ranging from $50 to $150 with select purchases, there are better deals out there.

Case in point — Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart have had Cyber Week deals going for actual weeks, offering hundreds of dollars in savings.

Basically, all the good Apple deals we find from other retailers year-round are even better at the moment. For instance, the M1 MacBook Air is back down to $800 for the second time this shopping season, several Apple Watches are back down to their all-time low prices, and the new iPad Pro is $100 off.

Obviously, there are a lot of deals to keep track of as we slowly reach the end of a marathon-length shopping season, but we'll keep the best Apple ones rounded up here until the bitter end.

Please note: All newly added deals have been marked with a ✨. Anything with a strikeout was either sold out or no longer available at the sale price as of this writing, but be sure to check back often — we're updating this page constantly.

Why we like it

Check out our full review of the M2 MacBook Air.

The 2022 MacBook Air comes at a slightly higher starting price than its 2020 counterpart, but for a few good reasons. One, it underwent a total redesign that gives it a more Pro-like look, while still maintaining the thin look the Air is known for. The keyboard is miles better than the Butterfly monstrosity, and you also get a full-sized function role. We wish its 60Hz refresh rate offered a little more, but the M2 chip gives top-of-the-line performance. And that slightly larger 13.6-inch screen and 1080p webcam make a difference. (If you're looking for more built-in storage space, the 512GB model is also at its lowest price ever.)

Even with the release of iPadOS 16, let's be real — no one is really using their iPad as a complete laptop replacement. When it comes down to it, most people want a tablet to be portable, to stream shows and videos easily, maybe run some creative work, and not run out of battery quickly. The iPad Mini checks pretty much most of those boxes. For casual use, the battery does well, but the A15 Bionic chip brings the speed (you don't need an M1 or M2 chip to play games and watch YouTube). The 8.3-inch display is compact without being way too small, the USB-C charging port adds a level of convenience the iPhone would be well suited to follow, and the stereo speakers sound great. All these factors together make it clear why this tablet is a Mashable Choice pick — and a great deal to boot.

Apple Watch deals

Why we like it

If you want to grab the latest Apple Watch with a 45mm band you'll be paying at least $379 — and that's if you catch it at its lowest price ever. Opting instead for last year's Series 7 still gets a large, bright, always-on, crack-resistant display. In terms of fitness features, you get blood oxygen and ECG sensors, as well as a heart rate monitor. You won't get the crash detection and temperature sensors of the Series 8, but if those weren't must-have features for you anyway, saving at least $70 and going for the Series 7 is the move.

Why we like them

The biggest con of Apple's noise-canceling earbuds was their price. But with a new generation out and Black Friday sales beginning, the first-gen AirPods Pro are back down to their lowest price ever at $159. With a case that gives up to 24 hours of battery life and some of the best active noise cancellation in the game, this price is hard to pass up.

If you're interested in the idea of the ANC of the AirPods Pros but less interested in their price tag, the Beats Studio Buds offer a worthy alternative. The ANC might not quite match up to the Pros standard, but with 8 hours of battery life per charge (that's longer than the second-gen Pros) and impressive bass for buds, you might just find them worth the trade-off. Plus, you get more color options.

Cyber Monday's best TV deals include a 75-inch Samsung model for under $600

TV on wood stand

UPDATE: Nov. 26, 2022, 8:00 p.m. EST This story has been updated to reflect current Cyber Monday TV deals from retailers like Best Buy, Walmart, Amazon, and Target.

When it comes to big-ticket items on Cyber Monday, TVs are always a given. It's not unrealistic for retailers to devote 10 (or more) pages to TV deals in their official Black Friday or Cyber Monday ad scans. But each year, it's becoming less and less necessary to use those ad scans as a means of previewing what you'll actually buy on Cyber Monday — because those deals have been live for weeks.

We've seen a few significant price changes across the LG and Amazon Fire lineups now that Cyber Week 2022 has officially started (shoutout to the now-defunct LG C1 OLED doorbuster), but the vast majority of deals that have popped up in major retailers' ongoing holiday sales are holding steady. When Best Buy, Walmart, and Target said they were going to be offering Black Friday prices throughout November, they really meant it.

Need help sorting through the cornucopia Cyber Monday TV deals to see what's actually worth buying? We've pulled everything into one big list, categorized by brand and listed in order of size (smallest to largest) and then by price.

Note: Any newly added or updated deals have been marked with a ✨, while deals with a strikeout were either sold out or expired at the time of writing.

Samsung TV deals

Why we love it

The 2022 version of Samsung's entry-level Crystal UHD series brings crisp color accuracy and HDR. For budget shoppers who want to go big, it's going to be hard for anyone to beat Best Buy's discount on the 75-inch model, which brings it well under the $600 mark.

Gamers looking to go all-out on their setup should take advantage of Best Buy's slash on one of LG's latest models, the C2. The successor to the beloved C1 TV might just be the best gaming TV available, providing low-latency gameplay, compatibility with NVIDIA G-SYNC, and four 120Hz HDMI ports. The C2 also welcomes a processor upgrade and brighter Evo OLED panel.

Sony TV deals

Why we love it

One of the heftiest Cyber Monday discounts we're seeing on a Sony TV is the $1,000 slash on Sony's 2022 flagship, the A95K. This splurge-worthy stunner is impressing reviewers across the internet with its HDR brightness and Sony's Bravia QD-OLED panel, which combines the meticulous viewing angles of OLED and color-boosting quantum dot layer of QLED.

Before you hit "Buy Now" on Amazon's 55-inch Omni 4K TV, consider the 55-inch model of Amazon's entry level version of the Fire TV instead — it's nearly half the price. For a budget model, the self-titled Amazon Fire TV (technically the 4-Series) has good color and decent viewing angles, plus the iconically easy-to-navigate Fire TV platform housing all of your apps.
