Walmart+ launches Sept 15, offering same-day delivery, gas discounts and cashierless checkout for $98/yr

Walmart today officially unveiled its new membership service and Amazon Prime rival, which it’s calling “Walmart+.” The $98 per year service will combine free, unlimited same-day delivery on groceries and thousands of other items, with additional benefits, like fuel discounts and access to a new Scan & Go service, similar to Walmart-owned Sam’s Club, that will allow members to check out at Walmart stores without having to wait in line.

The service will be available starting on September 15, 2020 nationwide, reaching over 4,700 Walmart stores, including 2,700 stores that offer delivery. Members can choose to pay the $98 per year after a 15-day free-trial period, or they can pay $12.95 on a month-to-month basis.

At launch, the new program promises more than 160,000 items for same-day delivery with no per-delivery fee on orders totaling $35 or more. This is the same value proposition that Walmart’s existing “Delivery Unlimited” program offers today. With the launch of Walmart+, “Delivery Unlimited” members will be moved to the rebranded and expanded service.

In addition to delivery savings, the new Walmart+ membership will include fuel discounts of up to 5 cents per gallon on any fuel type at nearly 2,000 Walmart, Murphy USA and Murphy Express stations nationwide. Walmart+ members will enable the discounts by using the Walmart mobile app, either by scanning a QR code or entering a PIN at the pump. Further down the road, the program will expand to include Sam’s Club fuel stations as well.

The Scan & Go membership perk, meanwhile, lets Walmart+ members pay without having to wait in checkout lines — a nice perk to have amid a pandemic, where time in store means time exposed to potential carriers of the novel coronavirus. Using the Walmart app, customers scan scan items as they shop, then pay for them using Walmart Pay for a touch-free checkout experience.

Walmart two years ago had tested cashierless Scan & Go technology in its stores, but killed the program due to shopper theft. Arguably, fewer people will use Scan & Go because it’s a paid service, which could help store staff better combat the earlier problems.

As with “Delivery Unlimited,” the Walmart+ orders are picked by in-store staff then handed off to partners like Postmates, DoorDash, Roadie and Point Pickup for delivery. Not owning the end-to-end experience can cause issues for consumers, however — especially because a poor delivery experience can damage Walmart’s reputation, or because customer service issues can’t be always dealt with directly when a middleman is involved. Walmart has also seen partners come and go, as delivery services ended their relationship with Walmart over the costs involved.

Walmart claims its new program is not a Prime rival. But it could encourage some number of Prime members to make a switch.

“We’re not launching Walmart+ with the intent to compete with anything else. We’re launching it with the needs of customers in mind,” explained Walmart Chief Customer Officer Janey Whiteside.

“Of course, I hope that brings in more customers and makes them more loyal, but when you’re as big as Walmart is — and serving as many people as we are — this is about really doubling down with the customers that we have and getting more share of wallet and more share of mind,” Whiteside added.

Prime is a much more expansive program. For comparison, Prime offers tens of millions of products for two-day delivery, over 10 million for one-day delivery and over 3 million for same-day delivery on orders of $35 or more. Walmart+ is focused more specifically on same-day delivery, as Walmart.com already offers free one-day or two-day shipping on orders of $35 or more without requiring a membership fee.

Prime today also offers a huge array of other perks — like access to free music, video, audiobooks, Kindle books and more. Walmart+ does not.

Still, for many customers, the value in Prime is rooted in its promise of speedy delivery. But at the same time, Amazon has tested the limits of its customer loyalty by steadily raising Prime’s subscription price over the years to now $119 when paid annually, or $12.99 per month. Walmart+ undercuts Prime at $98 per year or $12.95 per month while largely catering to the online grocery shopper — a target market that has rapidly grown during the pandemic. Walmart recently reported the pandemic helped drive its own e-commerce sales, fueled  by online grocery, up 97% in the past quarter.

Meanwhile, Amazon’s grocery strategy since its 2017 purchase of Whole Foods has yet to be streamlined. Amazon today continues to offer two different online grocery services, Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods, with a varying array of pickup and delivery options, potentially leading to consumer confusion.

That said, the pandemic has led to massive sales increases for Amazon and Walmart, along with other essential retailers like Target, with all involved reporting stellar earnings in recent quarters.

Walmart’s plans for a new subscription program had previously been reported and a placeholder website has also been live for some time. In August, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon told investors on the company’s earnings call that it was readying the launch a membership program that would be centered around delivery. He noted also at the time how Walmart’s existing “Delivery Unlimited” subscription, launched last year, would serve a “great base of an offer” for the broader program, but didn’t offer a launch time frame.

Earlier reports said the service would include other perks, like access to more grocery time slots, promotional deals and eventually a Walmart+ credit card. The retailer declined to speak to its plans, only saying that Walmart+ benefits would expand over time.

“As is the case with any great membership offering, these benefits are not intended to be static. We will continue to leverage our assets and scale to bring solutions at unprecedented value, all while holding true to the everyday low prices that customers know they can always expect from Walmart,” Whiteside said. “In the future, we will be leveraging our wide-ranging strengths to add additional benefits for members in a range of both services and offerings,” she added.

End #vanlife

It was the best of vans,

It was the worst of vans.

From Vancouver to Los Cabos, I explored the west coast of North America in that van.

My daughter's childhood memories will be filled with camping trips all over Northern California in that van. She named it Serendipity and stuck each sticker on the back window for us.

I fell in love in that van.

Last July, my dog Nemo died in that van. I never slept in it again.

In February, when I took possession of my new home the transmission let go. I had long expected it, and she got me home. I picked the wrong shop to rebuild it and a few miles north of Santa Barbara airport she suffered a catastrophic failure.

Having just restored a 1902 craftstman shotgun shack I lacked the energy. A very good, life long friend of mine had long wanted to do a ground up restoration of that van.

I let him have it for a song.

The Herbal Infuser makes your own infused edibles and saves some serious cash

If you're a fan of edibles, then you already know this, but for everybody else, a look at the price of some standard edibles might shock you. Depending on the dosage, an edible baked good is often about $15 to $20. A weed-infused lollipop is $10 to $12. And a pound of butter with a healthy supply of THC could be anywhere from $40 to $60

Of course, the price of these items usually depends on the cost of the cannabis that's inside. But rather than paying a premium for these infused goodies, it's always going to save you a healthy bit of cash to just make them yourself.

For years, that's often been easier said than done. But the Hi Herbal Infuser is all about helping users create herbally-infused foods faster and easier than ever before.

Unlike other infusion devices, the Herbal Infusion was designed to look perfectly at home sitting on your kitchen counter or tabletop. Crafted from stainless steel and high-quality, food-grade materials, it appears and mostly works just like most kitchen appliances.

Once you've measured out your herb, you can choose one of three state-of-the-art microprocessor-controlled infusion cycles for your product, whether you're infusing butter, oil, tincture, honey, agave, milk or something else.

The Hi is able to quickly and efficiently transfer plant compounds from herbs directly into your base, producing anywhere from 2 to 5 cups worth of highly potent butter, oil, milk, honey, maple syrup and more in just 45 minutes. There's also a 90-minute cycle for strains that require some extra time as well as a 4-hour cycle capable of infusing alcohol.

The unit also has a built-in digital LED countdown timer, so you'll always know when your infusion is finished. With just one infusion process, you can make yourself several months' worth of infused foodstuff.

The Herbal Infuser also comes with its own detailed recipe book, loaded with recipes, tips, and suggestions on any infusion from herb butter, oils, tinctures, puree soups, nut milks and more.

Retailing at $144, you can get The Herbal Infuser right now and save almost 10 percent off with this offer, down to just $129.99.

Prices are subject to change.

Delta and American join United in ending change fees for most US flights

Oh they REALLY want you to start flying again. We may be witnessing the end of the $200 ticket-change fees that U.S. airline travelers have hated for at least a decade.

Delta Air Lines and American Airlines both said Monday they will drop the $200 fee that applied to changes on most tickets for most domestic flights, copying United Airlines' announcement from one day ago.

From the Associated Press:

Southwest Airlines didn't levy change fees to start with, so Monday's announcements mean that the four biggest U.S. carriers will have roughly similar policies.

Airlines are being battered by the coronavirus pandemic, as travel restrictions and fear of contracting the virus are keeping travelers at home. Normally in summer, 2 million or more people pass through security checkpoints at U.S. airports each day, but that number hasn't been above 900,000 since mid-March, the early days of the pandemic.

To woo passengers, airlines have required face masks and stepped up cleaning of planes. A few, including Delta, Southwest and JetBlue, limit seating, although American and United try to sell every seat.

Trump regime claws back 70% of pandemic relief money sent to dead people, Zombie-Americans outraged

The government of Donald Trump says it has recovered about 70% of those $1200 federal pandemic relief checks that were mistakenly sent to dead people.

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) said Monday the Treasury Department told GAO that roughly 70% of the $1.6 billion in economic stimulus checks mailed to dead people has now been recovered.

From AP:

The GAO said it could not immediately verify that amount but said its auditors were working with Treasury to determine the exact number of payments that have been recovered.

Treasury is also considering sending letters to request the return of the remaining outstanding payments, but has not moved forward with that effort yet, GAO said. Treasury said it was delaying that move because Congress is considering legislation that would clarify or make changes to payment eligibility requirements.

Marvel Pays Tribute to Chadwick Boseman

Actor Chadwick Boseman died on Friday after a four-year battle with colon cancer. Boseman played both Jackie Robinson and James Brown in films, but he was best known for his role as T’Challa / Black Panther in four Marvel movies. In this short video featuring behind-the-scenes footage from those films and interviews from his colleagues, Marvel pays tribute to the best possible person they could have gotten to play that role.

I watched Black Panther for the third or fourth time over the weekend and while Michael B. Jordan always blows me away, it’s Boseman’s quiet intensity and magnetism that grounds Jordan’s performance and makes the whole “the bad guy has a point” plot work. Yeah ok, it’s just a superhero movie, but I think Black Panther is going to be one of those films that’s going to be relevant and reverberate for a long time.

Twitter's 'Quote Tweet' changes make sussing out online drama easier

Twitter's 'Quote Tweet' changes make sussing out online drama easier

Twitter's incredibly handy "Retweets with comments" feature is getting a rebranding, as well as becoming a tiny bit more convenient to use.

Earlier this year, Twitter added the option to see retweets that include a comment without having to use an automated account such as @QuotedReplies. Now the feature has been renamed, ditching the descriptive but clunky "Retweets with comments" for the cleaner "Quote Tweets."

Quote Tweets also appear between the Retweets and Likes on a tweet now, making the feature slightly less annoying to access. Previously, you had to click to see the Retweets, then click "Retweets with comments" from there. Now, you can just jump straight to the drama. Read more...

Some Oddball Stress Reset Exercises for 2020

It’s 2020 and you’re probably stressed out about something. Or many somethings. Multiplicative intersectional stress. Clinical psychologist Jenny Taitz wrote a short piece for the NY Times about five different techniques you can use to “reset” your stress. These aren’t substitutes for doing the long-term hard work of managing your emotional life, but they can be helpful for moving back into the yellow or green should you find yourself temporarily in the red.

Along with breathing and listening to music, Taitz suggests plunging your head into cold water:

Marsha Linehan, a professor emeritus in psychology at the University of Washington, popularized an exercise in dialectical behavior therapy to regulate intense emotions that involves immediately lowering your body temperature by creating a mini plunge pool for your face. This sounds odd, but it activates your body’s dive response, a reflex that happens when you cool your nostrils while holding your breath, dampening your physiological and emotional intensity.

To do it, fill a large bowl with ice water, set a timer for 15 to 30 seconds, take a deep breath and hold your breath while dipping your face into the water. While this isn’t conventionally relaxing, it will slow your heart rate, allowing blood to flow more easily to your brain. I love watching my clients try this over our telehealth calls and seeing firsthand how quickly this shifts their perspective. Just being willing to do this, I tell my clients as they prepare to submerge, is a way to practice being flexible.

Thanks to Jackson for highlighting these exercises on today’s episode of Kottke Ride Home.

Gillmor Gang: Platforming

Much was made during the Republican Convention of the lack of a party platform. The media characterized this as a capitulation to the Cult of Trump phenomenon, but the questioned begged was: so what? If you’re running as a candidate to disrupt the status quo…. But beneath the media framing, an important question emerges. What exactly is the platform we need to emerge from the toxic situation we find ourselves in?

For months, if not years, the technology industry has been working on a new platform to succeed the previous one. Mobile would seem to be that fundamental shift from the desktop world of Windows and PCs. The twin dominance of powerful phones by Google and Apple has created a new language of notifications and streaming video perfectly timed for the devastating pandemic. Our devices are now the front lines for managing the struggle to stay alive for our loved ones, the economy, and our future.

Zoom is of course the poster child for all that it enables, and certainly what it doesn’t. The notion of work from home is more likely a question of what is home and what’s the difference with work? The routines of life are congealing around the interactions with phone, watch, iPad, laptop, and TV. When I wake up, the first dive is for the notification stream built up overnight from overseas and then the East Coast. The rhythm varies from day to day: intense on Monday as the weekend cobwebs dissipate, more issue oriented through the middle of the week, and finally a thank-god-it’s Friday feel. Email, text messages, media updates, and work calendar reminders.

And then there’s the outline of the new platform — live streaming notifications from what some call citizen media, or the influencer network, or the loyal opposition. That last one refers to the decline in trust of the mainstream media. Maybe it’s just me, but the cable model of host-driven cyclical repetition of the headlines, talking heads, and medical ads adds up to a trip first to the mute button and eventually the off switch. Which plugs me right back into the notification stream and a new contract with us based on whether we click on the link or even allow the notification in the first place.

And these new voices are networks of one or a few, broadcasting on a global reach pastiche of cloud services that begin with the ubiquity of Zoom and its click and you’re there ease of on boarding. Then there are the key networks of record as it were: Facebook Live, Twitter/Periscope, YouTube, and maybe LinkedIn if you’re Brent Leary and got an early invite. There’s a whole bunch of streaming accelerators like Restream and StreamYard and Just Streams (I made that up) to use software and a dash of hardware to do what it took many thousands of dollars and cables just a few years ago. Right now it’s early days, but soon you’ll be seeing something that looks like the media it’s replacing as the OG buys in.

Don’t believe me? Just look at how streaming has disrupted the television industry. Or the music business. Or the reemergence of podcasting and newsletters. Or how messaging is growing rapidly as a preferred digital commerce and marketing channel. The pandemic has certainly had a devastating effect with the loss of theaters, events, and travel that drive so much of our economy and the emotional underpinning of our lives. But as we learn to respect the power of the virus to force this digital wave of transformation, we fuel the winners that emerge from a new hybrid blend of evolution and adaptation.

Technology has often been seen as impersonal and cold to the touch. But now we should be making friends with robots for touchless shopping, At the beginning of this Gillmor Gang session, Frank Radice seemed stunned by the administration’s takeover of the symbols of our Washington monuments for political purposes. By the end, he seemed more hopeful of a different result. We have more ways now of making our voices heard, broadcasting our own names in fireworks above and beyond the fake news and suppression. Our platform: suppress the virus, not the vote.

If you have always wanted to write your own novel or screenplay this training guide is a great starting point

Staring at the blank page is often the most intimidating moment of any writing project. Deciding exactly what to say and how to say it can be nerve-racking. If you're writing fiction, you've also got a whole separate set of questions that need answering.

Have you worked out your story beats? Have you defined your characters? Most importantly, have you truly determined what your work is supposed to be saying to your readers?

Big questions all, but knowing your work before you start to write is key to your success, regardless of the type of story you're telling. With the training in The Ultimate Creative Novel and Screenwriting Academy Bundle, students get expert guidance in bringing that story from idea to the page.

The collection features 11 courses with nearly 50 hours of instruction, offering proven techniques for story building throughout several different popular genres.

While novel writing is the heart of this compilation, non-fiction writers get some attention too in the Non-Fiction Writing Workshop and Write Your Life Story courses. Each offers helpful advice on the steps for writing either a non-fiction work or your biography.

If you're going to tell a story, you need to understand how that story works. That's the basis for the Novel Writing Workshop,  which breaks down the process of successful novel writing into six simple steps.

While the structure of a novel is mostly constant, various genres of writing often live and work under their own set of time-honored guidelines. Five of the biggest sub-genres and all of their idiosyncrasies earn focus here with courses in writing for children (Writing for Children), young adults (Young Adult Fiction Writing Workshop), or fans of the sci-fi/fantasy (Writing Science Fiction & Fantasy), mystery (Mystery Writing Workshop) and romance (Romance Writing Workshop) markets.

In Publish Your Book Now, you learn what to do with your finished tome, including the steps for self-publishing in paperback, e-book, and audiobook formats through Amazon and Kindle, often in the same day.

Since you might want to turn your book into a movie someday, the Screenwriting Workshop teaches the basics of creating and polishing a screenplay step by step, while Adapting Novel to Screenplay lays out how to adapt your original work into this new form.

Each of these 11 courses is a $199 value, but with the current deal, the entire package is available now for less than $5 per course, just $49.99.

Prices are subject to change.

First trailer for 'The Stand' teases the pandemic apocalypse, Stephen King style

CBS All Access just released the first teaser for 10-part miniseries The Stand, based on the post-apocalyptic fantasy novel by Stephen King. In The Stand, groups with opposing ideas of what society should be clash in the wake of a deadly pandemic, leading to significant repercussions for humanity's future. The book was originally released in 1978, but its themes are unsettlingly relevant to 2020.

The Stand's 30-second trailer doesn't give away much, mainly featuring people wandering eerily abandoned streets or experiencing emotional distress. We do get a good look at Whoopi Goldberg as spiritual leader Abagail Freemantle though, as well as Alexander Skarsgård's supernaturally powered Randall Flagg. Read more...

Police raid illegal all-night forest rave in England

Police broke up an illegal all-night rave on Sunday in Thetford Forest in eastern England. The rave raid came days after the British government launched a crackdown on "serious breaches" of COVID-19 restrictions. Potential fines for breaking the rules are as much as 10,000 pounds ($13,000).

From Reuters:

Dozens of officers, some holding protective shields, faced off with the revellers in Thetford Forest but despite a few scuffles, the party was largely dispersed peacefully. There did not appear to have been any arrests and the police dismantled the sound system.

Before a three-day bank holiday weekend, the government had said "those facilitating or organising illegal raves, unlicensed music events, or any other unlawful gathering of more than 30 people may face a 10,000-pound fine".

United to end widely hated $200 ticket-change fees as desperate plea for you to fly

United Airlines on Sunday released a video saying they've listened to customer complaints and will end their standard $200 fee for changing a ticket for travel within the United States.

"When we hear from customers about where we can improve, getting rid of fees is often the top request," United CEO Scott Kirby said in a video posted Sunday.

Also, starting in January, United will let customers fly standby for free on other flights the same day as their booked flight, reports the Associated Press:

United's move will put pressure on American Airlines and Delta Air Lines to drop their change fees, also $200 on domestic travel. Delta and American said they are waiving change fees for travel affected by the virus through the year's end. Southwest Airlines does not charge change fees, a policy which its CEO says has helped it gain more business.

United said that it eliminated change fees for people who buy a standard or premium economy ticket for U.S. travel.

United also said that it will extend a broad waiver of change fees — including for international travel — through Dec. 31. Customers who pay the lowest fares, called "basic economy," can also change tickets free because of the extended waiver announced Sunday.

Man killed in Utah park, bison attack suspected

Utah's KSL-TV reports a 55-year-old man from Syracuse, Utah, is dead after likely being gored by a bison.

Utah State Parks issued this statement about the suspected bison attack:

A 55-year-old man was critically injured today while trail running at Antelope Island State Park.

Two women who were on the Antelope Island State Park Lakeside Trail came across a lone trail runner who was calling out for help.  The women called 911 and state park personnel responded.  They then promptly administered first aid and called for a medical helicopter to transport the injured man to the University of Utah hospital for further treatment.

The man's injuries are consistent with a possible bison encounter, but there were no known witnesses.  This incident remains under investigation at this time.

From NBC News:

The man, whose name has not been released publicly, died on Saturday night, a family friend told KSL-TV. TODAY reached out to Utah State Parks for comment but did not immediately hear back. The friend said the man ran on Antelope Island regularly.

The day before the attack, the official Instagram account for Antelope Island State Park posted a warning alongside a picture of a bison.

From KSL TV in Salt Lake City:

"He was certainly injured," [said Eugene Swalberg, public affairs coordinator for the Utah State Parks], "But there was no eyewitness, and we don't know how long he'd been lying there. He certainly had injuries consistent with a goring, but it's still under investigation, so we cannot definitively say that's what happened."

In addition to wounds that were "consistent with a goring," the man had lacerations that also support being thrown by a bison.

"There was a hat near this individual and also some earbuds," he said. "Was he running with earbuds and spooked a bison? That's entirely possible. We just don't know the circumstances, but he does have wounds and injuries consistent with a goring … and maybe if he was thrown, lacerations from the rocks."

He said the area where the man was found "is an area that's certainly frequented by bison. It's on the north end of the island, near the corrals and the administration building." He said park employees called for a medical helicopter, and the man was flown to University of Utah Hospital in critical condition.

Legionnaire's Disease pathogen found in water at some schools reopening after Covid-19 lockdowns

Great, another thing for worried parents to worry about in Fall, 2020. The pathogen that causes Legionnaire's Disease has been found in the water at some schools reopening after long Covid-19 lockdowns.

"Legionella could lurk in the water supplies of school buildings, and some measures to keep people in schools safe from coronavirus may even increase risks from deadly illnesses caused by the bacteria," reports Max Horberry at the New York Times:

Last week in Ohio, officials found Legionella at five schools in an assortment of towns. On Friday, a district in Pennsylvania also announced it had found Legionella at four of its schools.

"It is unusual to hear about nine schools in a one-week period having a detection of Legionella," said Andrew Whelton, an associate professor of civil, environmental and ecological engineering at Purdue University in Indiana who has been studying the effects of lockdown on water systems. He said that more schools may be testing for the bacteria than in a typical year.

Legionella, usually Legionella pneumophila, is the bacteria that causes Legionnaires' disease, a respiratory condition. It can form in stagnant water and then disperse through the air and be inhaled when, for example, a shower or tap is turned on. It can be fatal in one in 10 cases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Although young children are less at risk of Legionnaires', older students, adults and people with compromised immune systems are vulnerable.

To protect against the spread of coronavirus, many school buildings have been unoccupied since March. Their bathrooms, cafeterias and sports facilities have gone unused. While low occupancy in schools is typical during summer breaks, many are open for summer school and other activities. Experts worry that water was left to stagnate in plumbing during lockdown, and that schools don't have plans or effective guidance from health authorities for dealing with the effects of prolonged shutdowns.
