Giant X removed from Twitter HQ after slew of safety complaints

X logo sign

Goodbye, giant X logo sign erected hastily atop Twitter headquarters in San Francisco on Friday night.

Just days after the large metal "X" logo was built to mark the new name of Elon Musk's social media platform, workers were already deconstructing the sign, according to local news reports. It was completely removed by Monday afternoon.

Its removal ends a short saga which saw a slew of complaints from Musk's neighbors about the sign's unsafe build and strobe lighting. The company had also turned away inspectors with the San Francisco Department of Buildings multiple times over the past few days who wanted to check out the permitless structure.

The large X sign went up late last week, marking the end of a five-day stretch that saw Elon Musk rid Twitter of its name and iconic bird logo, in favor of calling the platform X. Early Saturday morning, Musk posted a video on the social media platform, depicting the glowing X sign which was erected just hours earlier.

"Our HQ in San Francisco tonight," tweeted Musk alongside a visual of the pulsating lights of the X logo perched atop the main building where the company resides.

However, the X logo came as a surprise to the neighborhood and it was immediately treated as an unwelcome guest. Local San Francisco residents immediately started posting videos depicting the bright lights emanating from the X logo, including a strobe lighting effect.

Some pointed out that the strobe lights were especially dangerous as they could induce seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy.

One Twitter user posted a video from the point of view of one of the apartments next door.

"This is my life now," tweeted @realchrisjbeale with a video of the bright lighting effects glowing through the apartment window.

Overhead photos taken by those in the surrounding areas also showed another cause for concern: It appeared that the giant X structure erected on the rooftop was simply being weighed down with sandbags.

Social media users noted that they wouldn't walk down that street due to the potential hazards caused by the installation.

Responding to complaints, the San Francisco Department of Buildings sent an inspector to Twitter headquarters on Friday, but that inspector was turned away by the company.

According to the inspector on the scene, a company representative declined to provide rooftop access and explained that the lighted sign was a "temporary structure for an event." The inspector noted that he spoke with the property manager and attempted to gain access again the following day.

"Upon arrival access was denied again by tenant," the inspector wrote in the public case notes filed with the department on Saturday. The inspector issued the company with a notice of violation, which may result in fines, due to the lack of a permit for the structure.

Today, the city of San Francisco uploaded nearly two dozen more complaints it received since the X structure went up. Many complainants noted the use of the sandbags and the issues with the X logo's strobe lighting. An additional note made mention of lighting on the logo that allegedly began "drooping" off.

Musk's company created similar building-related issues last week when attempting to remove the old Twitter logo sign from the side of the building. Police temporarily shut down the sign takedown due to potential safety issues stemming from the sidewalk and street not being closed down.

Wordle game displayed on a phone and a laptop screen

New week, new day, new Wordle! As always, we're here with some tips and tricks to help you figure out the solution.

If you just want to be told the answer, you can jump to the end of this article for July 31's Wordle solution revealed. But if you want to solve it yourself, keep reading for some clues, tips, and strategies to assist you.

Where did Wordle come from?

Originally created by engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner, Wordle rapidly spread to become an international phenomenon, with thousands of people around the globe playing every day. Alternate Wordle versions created by fans also sprang up, including battle royale Squabble, music identification game Heardle, and variations like Dordle and Quordle that make you guess multiple words at once

Wordle eventually became so popular that it was purchased by the New York Times, and TikTok creators even livestream themselves playing.

Not the day you're after? Here's the Wordle answer for July 30.

What happened to the Wordle archive?

Why are there two different Wordle answers some days?

The Times has since added its own updated word list, so this should happen even less frequently than before. To avoid any confusion, it's a good idea to refresh your browser before getting stuck into a new puzzle.

Here's a subtle hint for today's Wordle answer:

'Talk to Me's terrifying ending explained

A woman wearing a yellow jacket, leans over a chair looking possessed.

There's a reason why Talk to Me is currently the highest-rated horror film of 2023 on Rotten Tomatoes.

Danny and Michael Philippou's feature directorial debut follows a group of teenagers in Australia who stumble upon an embalmed hand that can conjure lost spirits. The hand quickly becomes the group's favorite party favor, as they treat it almost like a drug that they can't stop messing with regardless of its threatening consequences. That is, of course, up until the hand's true malevolence comes to fruition.

While a lot of Talk to Me's fear factor is built on its stunningly grotesque practical effects, the film's true power rests in the sheer ambiguity of its ending and who (or what) may be behind the hand. But the hand's magic has strict rules about how to use it safely, and those rules mean that our protagonist, Mia (Sophie Wilde), has been possessed from her very first encounter with it. And that detail answers all our questions about the film's stunning last scene. Let's dive in.

How does the hand in Talk to Me work?

A group of friends lounge in a living room, an embalmed hand is centered on a table.
Credit: Andre Castellucci/ A24

As explained by Hayley (Zoe Terakes) and Joss (Chris Alosio), Mia's friends and the hand's current owners, the hand either belonged to a medium who could contact the spirit world or a Satanist. While its true origins remain a mystery, we know that the hand was cut off from its original body — perhaps to permanently halt communication with spirits or to ensure that the door remains open forever — and was embalmed with ceramic.

There's a whole ritual for using the hand to contact the spirit world. First, light a candle to act as a beacon to the spirit realm, and then recite the words "talk to me" while holding the hand. When a spirit appears, surrender control over your body by declaring, "I let you in." To expel the spirit and close the door between the two realms, the candle needs to be blown out and the hand removed from the person's grip. If a person dies while a spirit is still within them, then they'll join the spirit in that purgatorial realm and forever wander in the dark with other lost souls.

There's another rule, and it's a big one. You must end the ritual within 90 seconds... or else. We find out the reason for that rule when Mia's friend Riley (Joe Bird) starts mutilating himself after waiting too long. Breaking that rule also gives the spirits the power to stick around in the host's body. This is exactly Mia's fate by the end of the film.

Was Mia possessed?

A woman presses her hand against glass in a red room.
Credit: Matthew Thorne/ A24

Yes, she was, from the very beginning. When Mia first conjures a spirit with the hand, you'll remember that the spirit she lets in immediately takes a liking to Riley. The spirit mentions that they want him and warns him to run. After that, Mia starts seeing spirits around her, even when she's not holding the hand — this is a major hint that the spirit never left. And while she does seem to finish the ritual, it's entirely possible that it went over the allotted time, and a sneaky spirit simply latched on to an already-vulnerable person.

It's a similar situation to what happened to the hand's previous owner, Duckett (Sunny Johnson), as seen in the film's opening scene. At the start of Talk to Me, we watch Duckett's brother, Cole (Ari McCarthy), maneuver his way through a crowded house party as he desperately tries to find where Duckett is. Cole eventually finds Duckett alone in a room where he clearly looks unwell and begins stuttering that he's been talking to the spirit of their deceased father, who has been telling Duckett to kill Cole and himself to stop them from unleashing evil. Duckett then stabs Cole and kills himself in front of everyone at the party. Mia has an eerily similar experience, but with her mom.

Mia's mother passed away a few years ago. For years, Mia assumed it was an accidental overdose, but her dad, Max (Marcus Johnson), has known the whole time it was a suicide. He even has her mother's suicide letter, which he reads to Mia after her encounter with the hand. But her denial and grief understandably cloud her judgement, which the spirits exploit. Whenever Mia encounters her mom's spirit in the film, whether through apparitions or when she thinks Riley's talking to her, it isn't actually her mom. It's a malevolent spirit merely taking the form of her mom to mess with Mia.

We know the spirits can shape-shift; one of them even takes the shape of her father to try to hurt her. Both Mia and Duckett weren't actually seeing their parents but evil spirits who were exploiting their grief and trauma to hurt others while possessing them.

What happens in Talk to Me's ending?

A woman wearing a yellow jacket screams while sitting on a chair.

Mia is determined to help Riley, who's in the hospital after his terrifying spirit session. But Mia's also possessed, so whatever she thinks will help Riley is actually just what the spirit that's possessed her wants her to do. Mia's convinced that she needs to kill Riley in order to save him, which would permanently keep Riley's soul in the spirit realm forever. Remember, we've known since Mia's first experience with the hand that the spirits have their supernatural sights set on Riley.

Mia kidnaps Riley and takes his wheelchair to a highway where she plans on killing him. Riley's sister, Jade (Alexandra Jensen), arrives just in time to save him, but not before Mia jumps onto the highway herself and dies. Then we see Mia's ghost standing in a hospital, where she notices that Riley's fully healed — and that no one can see her. Mia's spirit is walking amongst the land of the living for the last time. As the lights go out one by one, Mia's transported into a dark realm where she sees one small, shimmering light. When she approaches it, she realizes it's a candle that's summoning her towards the new group of friends who now own the hand. She lets them in, and Talk to Me ends there.

Mia's possession means that she died with a spirit in her, which is why she's now stuck in their realm, though it's still unclear why Riley was able to fully heal. Perhaps it was because the spirits wanted Mia all along and were using Riley to torment her into killing herself. Or perhaps it's because they wanted one more soul, regardless of who it would be, so Mia dying was enough for them to let Riley go. Whatever the reason, we can assume from Mia's death that all souls wandering in Talk to Me's dark purgatory were previously people who either owned or messed with the hand, which is especially terrifying when we remember just how many spirits Mia's small group of friends were able to conjure by themselves.

Although Talk to Me's finale is a spectacularly twisted turn of fate, ending on a note that satisfies Mia's story, it still has us begging for more — and begging to be let in.

How to watch: Talk to Me is now playing in theaters.

'Quordle' today: Here are the answers and hints for July 29

A woman's hands holding a mobile phone playing 'Quordle'

If Quordle is a little too challenging today, you've come to the right place for hints. There aren't just hints here, but the whole Quordle solution. Scroll to the bottom of this page, and there it is. But are you sure you need all four answers? Maybe you just need a strategy guide. Either way, scroll down, and you'll get what you need.

What is Quordle?

Quordle is a five-letter word guessing game similar to Wordle, except each guess applies letters to four words at the same time. You get nine guesses instead of six to correctly guess all four words. It looks like playing four Wordle games at the same time, and that is essentially what it is. But it's not nearly as intimidating as it sounds.

Is Quordle harder than Wordle?

Yes, though not diabolically so.

Where did Quordle come from?

Amid the Wordle boom of late 2021 and early 2022, when everyone was learning to love free, in-browser, once-a-day word guessing games, creator Freddie Meyer says he took inspiration from one of the first big Wordle variations, Dordle — the one where you essentially play two Wordles at once. He took things up a notch, and released Quordle on January 30. Meyer's creation was covered in The Guardian six days later, and now, according to Meyer, it attracts millions of daily users. Today, Meyer earns modest revenue from Patreon, where dedicated Quordle fans can donate to keep their favorite puzzle game running.

How is Quordle pronounced?

“Kwordle.” It should rhyme with “Wordle,” and definitely should not be pronounced exactly like "curdle.”

Is Quordle strategy different from Wordle?

Yes and no.

Your starting strategy should be the same as with Wordle. In fact, if you have a favorite Wordle opening word, there’s no reason to change that here. We suggest something rich in vowels, featuring common letters like C, R, and N. But you do you.

After your first guess, however, you’ll notice things getting out of control if you play Quordle exactly like Wordle.

What should I do in Quordle that I don’t do in Wordle?

Solving a Wordle puzzle can famously come down to a series of single letter-change variations. If you’ve narrowed it down to “-IGHT,” you could guess “MIGHT” “NIGHT” “LIGHT” and “SIGHT” and one of those will probably be the solution — though this is also a famous way to end up losing in Wordle, particularly if you play on “hard mode.” In Quordle, however, this sort of single-letter winnowing is a deadly trap, and it hints at the important strategic difference between Wordle and Quordle: In Quordle, you can't afford to waste guesses unless you're eliminating as many letters as possible at all times.

Guessing a completely random word that you already know isn't the solution, just to eliminate three or four possible letters you haven’t tried yet, is thought of as a desperate, latch-ditch move in Wordle. In Quordle, however, it's a normal part of the player's strategic toolset.

Is there a way to get the answer faster?

In my experience Quordle can be a slow game, sometimes dragging out longer than it would take to play Wordle four times. But a sort of blunt-force guessing approach can speed things up. The following strategy also works with Wordle if you only want the solution, and don’t care about having the fewest possible guesses:

Try starting with a series of words that puts all the vowels (including Y) on the board, along with some other common letters. We've had good luck with the three words: “NOTES,” “ACRID,” and “LUMPY.” YouTuber DougMansLand suggests four words: “CANOE,” “SKIRT,” “PLUMB,” and “FUDGY.”

Most of the alphabet is now eliminated, and you’ll only have the ability to make one or two wrong guesses if you use this strategy. But in most cases you’ll have all the information you need to guess the remaining words without any wrong guesses.

If strategy isn't helping, and you're still stumped, here are some hints:

Are there any double or triple letters in today’s Quordle words?

No.

Are any rare letters being used in today’s Quordle like Q or Z?

No.

What do today’s Quordle words start with?

V, A, A, and L.

What are the answers for today’s Quordle?

Are you sure you want to know?

There’s still time to turn back.

OK, you asked for it. The answers are:

  1. VALUE

  2. ALONG

  3. ALIVE

  4. LEAST

'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem' mid-credits scene explained

The Turtles celebrate

You've come. You've turtled. You've got questions about that mid-credits sequence.

We're here to help.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem follows the coming-of-age adventure of turtle-human hybrids, Donatello (Micah Abbey), Raphael (Brady Noon), Leonardo (Nicolas Cantu), and Michelangelo (Shamon Brown Jr.).  who dream above all else of going to high school and being cool.

After a fateful meeting with teen reporter April O'Neil (Ayo Edebiri), the boys decide they'll win over both the local New York City high schoolers and the whole metro area — if only they could heroically capture the notorious villain Superfly, who's been pulling off heists and knocking off local criminals. If they can do what the NYPD — and the super shady Techno Cosmic Research Institute (TCRI) — cannot, not only are they sure to be beloved, but the school will likely un-cancel prom! (And maybe Leo can go with his newly minted crush, April?)

What happened in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem mid-credits scene?

April and the turtles
Credit: Paramount

Once the turtles realize that Superfly is 1) A mutant like themselves, and 2) dead-set on using his stolen tech and sci-fi brain to eradicate mankind and make all other animals into mutants, the whole "we have to save prom" plotline gets pretty sidelined. Now, they have to save the world — and not just for street cred.

After the day is saved with little help from their friends, the brothers head back to the sewer, where their mutant cousins have all moved in, bringing new life and sloppy cockroach kisses to their chosen family. This kooky cluster of critters sees them off on their first day of high school, where they ditch their ninja masks for human clothes, like khakis, polo shirts, wild-printed button-downs, hoodies, and baggy jeans. (Still in their signature colors of course!)

Thanks to their televised saving of the city, the boys are embraced by the students as soon as they walk down the hall. And April has been redeemed, her graffitied locker no longer reading "puke girl," but "cool girl!"

However, in the mid-credits sequence, directors Jeff Rowe and Kyler Spears reward those patiently waiting in the audience with a peek at the uncanceled prom!

The mid-credits sequence begins with a montage of the boys finding their footing in high school. Donnie turns on his camera phone and rejoices that he's found a community of fellow anime lovers. Mikey is hamming it up with the improv troupe he dreamed of joining. Raph has joined the wrestling team, naturally. And Leo is helping April with the next step in her investigation: What's the deal with TCRI?

Then, amid this study-buddy setting, Leo asks April to prom, and she says yes!

Cut to: all the turtles having a blast at the big dance, where April accidentally sneak-attacks Leo by noting they're attending as friends.

Before we can dwell too hard on Leo getting crushed by his crush, the movie cuts to surveillance footage of the heroes on the half-shell at prom. TCRI — specifically its malicious leader Cynthia Utrom (Maya Rudolph) — are watching them. And that's not all. She's got a housefly in a container, which we can safely assume is the de-mutant-ized Superfly. And, she declares, "Bring me the Shredder."

Boom: The familiar spiky silhouette of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' most iconic enemy lurks, overlooking the Manhattan skyline.

What does Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem mean for a sequel?

Teenage mutant ninja turtles
Credit: Paramount Pictures

Paramount has already announced a sequel and spinoff series for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and this mid-credits sequence suggests TCRI, Cynthia, and Shredder will play a big role.

In the first act, Cynthia's minions ambushed and killed scientist Baxter Stockman (Giancarlo Esposito) to steal his special ooze. She'll clearly stop at nothing to pursue her plan of weaponizing the ooze to make hybrid soldiers for unnamed armies. Presumably, Cynthia isn't done trying to milk the turtles of their mutant juices (just as their father Splinter feared!) And, weirdly, the brothers did not demolish that milking machine, so that's a very real threat!

However, Cynthia now knows her armed-to-the-teeth human soldiers are no match for a mutated rat and his four turtle sons. Plus, that family has now got all their mutated cousins in their crew! So, here comes The Shredder and presumably his Foot Clan army.

TCRI will clearly be the overarching evil of the rebooted franchise. But there's a clue in Cynthia's last name about how she, specifically, might become a next-level menace to the turtles. "Utrom" is the name of an alien species in TMNT canon. So, Cynthia might be hiding a secret of her own. More importantly, Utrom is the species that the globby brain-like monster Krang comes from in past TMNT incarnations. So...could Maya Rudolph's ruthless exec become the next Krang? (Not to be confused with the MCU's Kang.)

Shredder, on the other hand, is typically the archnemesis of the Turtles. In the past, he's been a rival ninja, who hates Splinter. But Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has been playing with the standard TMNT backstory, it's hard to assume too much about this Shredder. However, there is a potential clue in the first half of the movie.

When Splinter ushers audiences into a flashback of how he became the turtles' adoptive father, he recounts how he once took them to Times Square so they could see human culture up close. The tourists and New Yorkers in the city's shiniest bauble lost their cool, chasing the "Ratman" down a dark alley. Splinter specifically notes one man would not give up the chase, and the flashback shows a man with a bat, backlit so you can't see his face.

At first, it seemed this might be a nod to the sports-gear-wielding vigilante Casey Jones. But what if this human, who Splinter had to escape to save his sons — was the Shredder? Did Splinter defensively deface this attacker? Does he carry a grudge?

And what about Superfly? Is he just a fly for good? Or will Cynthia give him another shot at that hybrid life in hopes he'll turn on the turtles and all of his mutant family, who he feels betrayed him?

We'll have to wait and see when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem gets its sequel or spinoff series.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem opens in theaters July 28.

'Quordle' today: Here are the answers and hints for July 27

OK, you asked for it. The answers are:

  1. EVADE

  2. SPICE

  3. FLOAT

  4. ALIGN

Wordle today: Here's the answer and hints for July 25

Woman plays Wordle on her smartphone from the living room of her home

It's Tuesday, and like every other day, that means a brand new Wordle! As always, we're here with some tips and tricks to help you figure out the solution.

If you just want to be told the answer, you can jump to the end of this article for July 25's Wordle solution revealed.

Here's the Wordle answer for July 24.

What's the best Wordle starting word?

The best Wordle starting word is the one that speaks to you. But if you like being strategic in your approach, we have a few ideas to help you pick a word that might help you find the solution faster. One tip is to select a word that includes at least two different vowels, plus some common consonants like S, T, R, or N.

What happened to the Wordle archive?

The entire archive of past Wordle puzzles used to be available for anyone to enjoy whenever they felt like it. Unfortunately, it has since been taken down, with the website's creator stating it was done at the request of the New York Times.

Is Wordle getting harder?

It might feel like Wordle is getting harder, but it actually isn't any more difficult than when it first began. You can turn on Wordle's Hard Mode if you're after more of a challenge, though.

Why are there two different Wordle answers some days?

Though usually Wordle will only accept one correct solution per day, occasionally it will rebel against the norm and deem two different answers acceptable. This is due to changes the New York Times made to Wordle after it acquired the puzzle game.

The Times has since added its own updated word list, so this should happen even less frequently than before. To avoid any confusion, it's a good idea to refresh your browser before getting stuck into a new puzzle.

Here's a subtle hint for today's Wordle answer:

Round and round, round and round...

Does today's Wordle answer have a double letter?

It does! And they're in the same positions as yesterday's matching pair.

Today's Wordle is a 5-letter word that starts with...

Today's Wordle starts with the letter W.

What's the answer to Wordle today?

Get your last guesses in now, because it's your final chance to solve today's Wordle before we reveal the solution.

Drumroll please!

The solution to Wordle #766 is...

WHEEL.

Don't feel disheartened if you didn't manage to guess it this time. There will be a new Wordle for you to stretch your brain with tomorrow, and we'll be back again to guide you with more helpful hints.
