Wordle today: Here's the answer, hints for January 1

A phone playing Wordle

Happy New Year!

If you like starting a new habit to get 2023 off in a good way, we here at Mashable’s Wordle Central have an idea: Gardening. Oh, and Wordle, of course! We’ll even give you tips and hints to help you along the way.

If you want to bypass the struggle, you can jump to the bottom of this article to get January 1's Wordle solution straight up. But if you prefer to work it out yourself, keep reading for a few clues, tips, and strategies to help you get there.

Where did Wordle come from?

While engineer Josh Wardle originally created Wordle for his partner, the word guessing game has since become a daily habit for thousands of players across the globe. In fact, Wordle became so popular that it was eventually purchased by the New York Times

Wordle has also inspired numerous fanmade clones and alternate iterations, such as battle royale Squabble, music identification game Heardle, and variations like Dordle and Quordle that have you trying to guess multiple words at once. It has also provided ample content for TikTok creators, because sometimes it's nice to just watch someone solve a problem rather than do it yourself.

Not the day you're after? Here's the Wordle answer for December 31.

What's the best Wordle starting word?

Like snowflakes, every Wordle starting word has its own unique beauty. However, if you prefer to be strategic with your choice, we have a few ideas to help you optimise your first move. Some helpful tips include choosing a word that has at least two different vowels in it, and making sure there are some common consonants like S, T, R, or N mixed in.

What happened to the Wordle archive?

In happier times, the entire archive of past Wordles was openly available for everybody to enjoy whenever they felt the urge for a word puzzle. Unfortunately this library has since been erased from the internet, with the website's creator saying its removal was at the New York Times' request.

Is Wordle getting harder?

Though it may feel as though solving Wordle's puzzles is more of a struggle than it used to be, the game isn't getting any harder. You are able to make it more difficult though, as Wordle has a Hard Mode you can enable.

Why are there two different Wordle answers some days?

While conventional wisdom states there should only be one Wordle solution on any given day, there are rare days where two different answers will be deemed acceptable. This is because the New York Times made changes to Wordle after acquiring it, swapping out some answers for new ones.

The Times has since added its own updated word list, so this should happen even less frequently than before. To avoid any confusion, it's a good idea to refresh your browser before getting stuck into a new puzzle.

Here's a subtle hint for today's Wordle answer:

But I don’t WANT to give you a hint. I want to go home.

Does today's Wordle answer have a double letter?

Nope.

Today's Wordle is a 5-letter word that ends with...

Today's Wordle ends with the letter E.

What's the answer to Wordle today?

The solution to Wordle #561 is...

'Quordle' today: Here are the answers and hints for December 30

A woman's hands holding a mobile phone playing 'Quordle'

If Quordle is a little too challenging today, you've come to the right place for hints. There aren't just hints here, but the whole Quordle solution. Scroll to the bottom of this page, and there it is. But are you sure you need all four answers? Maybe you just need a strategy guide. Either way, scroll down, and you'll get what you need.

What is Quordle?

Quordle is a five-letter word guessing game similar to Wordle, except each guess applies letters to four words at the same time. You get nine guesses instead of six to correctly guess all four words. It looks like playing four Wordle games at the same time, and that is essentially what it is. But it's not nearly as intimidating as it sounds.

Is Quordle harder than Wordle?

Yes, though not diabolically so.

Where did Quordle come from?

Amid the Wordle boom of late 2021 and early 2022, when everyone was learning to love free, in-browser, once-a-day word guessing games, creator Freddie Meyer says he took inspiration from one of the first big Wordle variations, Dordle — the one where you essentially play two Wordles at once. He took things up a notch, and released Quordle on January 30. Meyer's creation was covered in The Guardian six days later, and now, according to Meyer, it attracts millions of daily users. Today, Meyer earns modest revenue from Patreon, where dedicated Quordle fans can donate to keep their favorite puzzle game running.

How is Quordle pronounced?

“Kwordle.” It should rhyme with “Wordle,” and definitely should not be pronounced exactly like "curdle.”

Is Quordle strategy different from Wordle?

Yes and no.

Your starting strategy should be the same as with Wordle. In fact, if you have a favorite Wordle opening word, there’s no reason to change that here. We suggest something rich in vowels, featuring common letters like C, R, and N. But you do you.

After your first guess, however, you’ll notice things getting out of control if you play Quordle exactly like Wordle.

What should I do in Quordle that I don’t do in Wordle?

Solving a Wordle puzzle can famously come down to a series of single letter-change variations. If you’ve narrowed it down to “-IGHT,” you could guess “MIGHT” “NIGHT” “LIGHT” and “SIGHT” and one of those will probably be the solution — though this is also a famous way to end up losing in Wordle, particularly if you play on “hard mode.” In Quordle, however, this sort of single-letter winnowing is a deadly trap, and it hints at the important strategic difference between Wordle and Quordle: In Quordle, you can't afford to waste guesses unless you're eliminating as many letters as possible at all times.

Guessing a completely random word that you already know isn't the solution, just to eliminate three or four possible letters you haven’t tried yet, is thought of as a desperate, latch-ditch move in Wordle. In Quordle, however, it's a normal part of the player's strategic toolset.

Is there a way to get the answer faster?

In my experience Quordle can be a slow game, sometimes dragging out longer than it would take to play Wordle four times. But a sort of blunt-force guessing approach can speed things up. The following strategy also works with Wordle if you only want the solution, and don’t care about having the fewest possible guesses:

Try starting with a series of words that puts all the vowels (including Y) on the board, along with some other common letters. We've had good luck with the three words: “NOTES,” “ACRID,” and “LUMPY.” YouTuber DougMansLand suggests four words: “CANOE,” “SKIRT,” “PLUMB,” and “FUDGY.”

Most of the alphabet is now eliminated, and you’ll only have the ability to make one or two wrong guesses if you use this strategy. But in most cases you’ll have all the information you need to guess the remaining words without any wrong guesses.

If strategy isn't helping, and you're still stumped, here are some hints:

Are there any double or triple letters in today’s Quordle words?

One word has a double letter.

Are any rare letters being used in today’s Quordle like Q or Z?

No.

What do today’s Quordle words start with?

R, B, R, and V.

What are the answers for today’s Quordle?

Are you sure you want to know?

There’s still time to turn back.

OK, you asked for it. The answers are:

  1. BASIN

  2. BAWDY

  3. REEDY

  4. VIGIL

One word has a twice-occurring letter.

Are any rare letters being used in today’s Quordle like Q or Z?

No.

What do today’s Quordle words start with?

T, V, V, and V.

What are the answers for today’s Quordle?

Are you sure you want to know?

There’s still time to turn back.

OK, you asked for it. The answers are:

  1. TORUS

  2. VIPER

  3. VALVE

  4. VAUNT

Wordle today: Here's the answer, hints for December 27

'Wordle' on a phone

Happy Tuesday everyone, and it’s time once more for a Wordle! Also, you get the usual helpful tips and hints to get you through it.

If you want to bypass the struggle, you can jump to the bottom of this article to get December 27's Wordle solution straight up.

Here's the Wordle answer for December 26.

Your relatives may have one in Florida.

Does today's Wordle answer have a double letter?

Yes! But they're not consecutive.

Today's Wordle is a 5-letter word that ends with...

Today's Wordle ends with the letter O.

What's the answer to Wordle today?

Lock in your final answers, because it's time to reveal the answer to today's Wordle.

Drum roll, please!

The solution to Wordle #556 is...

CONDO.

Don't be discouraged if you didn't guess it this time! There will be a new Wordle puzzle for you to try tomorrow, and we'll be back again with more tips and tricks to help you out.

Hulu's unsettling 'Gannibal' trailer shows 2022's cannibal screen trend ain't done yet

A man peers over a tree.

Hulu's trailer for dark Japanese horror-thriller Gannibal will have you rather on edge.

Based on Masaaki Ninomiya's hit manga and directed by Siblings of the Cape's Shinzô Katayama, the series hinges around the fictional rural Japanese village of Kyokamura, where the formidable Goto family run the show. Police officer Daigo Agawa (Hokusai star Yûya Yagira) arrives as the village's newest Chuzai (residential police) with his wife Yuki (Riho Yoshioka) and daughter Mashiro — yes, the previous Chuzai went mysteriously missing — and needs to uncover the village's horrendous truths.

Folks, we're just gonna say it. Cannibals, the year's hottest screen trend.

Gannibal has been adapted from the manga by screenwriter Takamasa Oe and produced by Teruhisa Yamamoto, both of whom brought us the wondrous Oscar-winner Drive My Car. Yep, it's a slight pivot in genre.

The final shots of this trailer? YIKES.

Gannibal is streaming on Hulu and Disney+ from Dec. 28.

'That '90s Show' trailer shows those '70s teens all grown up

A screenshot from That '90s Show's trailer.

A second trailer for Netflix's That '90s Show has arrived, giving us our first glimpse at that '70s cast 20 years on.

Set a couple of decades after That '70s Show, That '90s Show follows Leia Forman (Callie Haverda), the daughter of former That '70s Show teens Eric Forman (Topher Grace) and Donna Pinciotti (Laura Prepon). Following in her parents' footsteps, Leia will apparently spend the summer hanging out with her friends in her grandparents' basement — to Kitty's (Debra Jo Rupp) delight and Red's (Kurtwood Smith) disgruntlement.

Of course, the main question most '70s Show fans will be wondering is what the old gang are up to now. Along with the Formans, Jackie Burkhart (Mila Kunis), Michael Kelso (Ashton Kutcher), and Fez (Wilmer Valderrama) will all make appearances, with the latter seemingly having settled in the U.S. and opened a successful chain of beauty salons. Hippie Leo (Tommy Chong) will also show up.

And in case you were concerned the '80s Just Say No anti-drug campaign will impact the proud legacy of the Formans' basement, That '90s Show's trailer makes it clear the children are eager to continue their forebears' traditions. The apples don't fall far from the trees, apparently.

That '90s Show arrives on Netflix Jan. 19.

Netflix is delving into fitness with Nike Training Club programs

Closeup shot of a sporty woman using a cellphone while exercising in a studio.

Netflix is delving into fitness, and I, dear reader, couldn't be more...happy about it, yes, that's it.

The streaming giant has teamed up with Nike to launch its longstanding free workout app Nike Training Club on the platform on Dec. 30 (yep, New Year's, it's not lost on me). Basically, alongside your gloriously slothy binge-watching stretches, you'll be able to run up that hill physically and metaphorically and access exercise content too.

"It's not always easy to motivate yourself to exercise, but the option to feel the burn and then directly transition into one of your favourite shows does have a certain appeal," Netflix wrote in a blog post Thursday. "And now, that’s exactly what you can do."

Nike Training Club's Netflix offering will initially have five exercise programs made up of multiple episodes, released in 10 languages and made for varying fitness levels. There's the 13-episode program "Kickstart Fitness with the Basics," as well as programs for core, vinyasa yoga, HIT and strength, and "Feel Good Fitness."

Netflix users will be able to search "Nike" in the app to find the workouts. If you don't have Netflix, the Nike Training Club app is free to download for both Android and iOS.

A Netflix menu showing programs including Nike Training Club

Along with its highly popular Nike Run Club app, Nike Training Club been a signature of the athletic retail company for years, offering home workouts you can bust out on your phone or tablet anytime. Nike made in-app workouts within Nike Training Club free during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, and hasn't rolled it back since. Of course, as Reuters notes, this means the company has been able to gather a serious amount of personal data including individual exercise and buying habits. Just something to keep in mind.

This latest addition, meanwhile, is another feather in the cap of Netflix's ventures into more interactive, holistic content, from its partnership with Headspace to its gaming vertical.

The first batch of Nike fitness classes will launch worldwide on Netflix Dec. 30 with more to come in 2023. As Mashable's Australia Editor Caitlin Welsh correctly observed (credit where it's due), they really missed a trick by not calling this Netflixercise.

Whirlwind gay romance 'Of An Age' has a truly moving trailer

Two young men stand on either side of a car at night, looking at each other.

If you can get through the trailer for Of An Age without misting up, well done you.

The film is the latest from Macedonian Australian director Goran Stolevski, whose brutal, brilliant, witchy movie You Won't Be Alone was one of the best horror films of 2022. Suffice to say, his next endeavour is a major pivot, writing, directing, and editing a whirlwind gay romance drama and coming-of-age tale.

Set in one steamy summer in 1997, Of An Age follows 17-year-old Serbian-born Australian amateur ballroom dancer Nikola (Barracuda star Elias Anton). His friend and dance partner Ebony (Hattie Hook) introduces her brother Adam (Thom Green), and the pair develop a truly intense romance that neither of them saw coming.

The film premiered as the opener for the Melbourne International Film Festival in August, and will hit limited cinemas Feb. 10, then nationally in Australia on February 17. International dates are yet to be announced.

Mastodon has gained millions of new users since Elon Musk bought Twitter

Mastodon vs. Twitter

It appears that a Twitter alternative has officially broken out from the pack.

According to an update from Mastodon, the decentralized, open-source Twitter alternative has been gaining traction fast ever since Twitter was taken over by its new owner, Elon Musk.

"Mastodon has recently exploded in popularity, jumping from approx. 300K monthly active users to 2.5M between the months of October and November, with more and more journalists, political figures, writers, actors and organizations moving over," Mastodon creator Eugen Rochko said in a statement.

From 300,000 users to 2,500,000 in just a month is pretty substantial growth, particularly for a platform that's just one of many duking it out in a competition to replace Musk's chaotic new Twitter. At the beginning of last month, just days after Musk became owner of Twitter, Mastodon shared that it had around 655,000 users. So, this recent update shows that the growth trend wasn't some one-time swing with new users joining at a specific moment. Elon Musk's ongoing antics appear to be helping Mastodon sustain that growth.

It should be noted that these numbers only include Mastodon usage up to the end of November. It will be interesting to see how growth looks in December, especially during the period immediately following Musk suspension of a handful of journalists who reported on him, and the banning of the @ElonJet account. (Disclosure: I am one of those suspended journalists.)

As someone who set up an account at Mastodon in April when word first broke that Musk was planning to acquire Twitter, the change at this alternative platform has been significant.

Mastodon has been around for roughly six years now and once had a fairly niche audience of tech-savvy users. Now, it's growing well beyond that. Users with all sorts of backgrounds seem to be finding their way on to Mastodon.

Of course, Mastodon is still nowhere near Twitter's much larger user base of around 250 million daily active users. And many Mastodon users are still using their Twitter accounts alongside their Mastodon account too, so they are not entirely divorced from the Musk-owned platform yet.

But, in this current social media landscape, it's always good to have alternatives. And Mastodon is making a convincing case that it's the place to go if you want something different from what Musk is offering.

SpaceX's Starlink announces it now has 1 million users

The Starlink logo on a smartphone, in front of an image of the Earth from space.

SpaceX has announced that its internet service provider Starlink now has over 1 million active subscribers. It seems CEO Elon Musk's ongoing Twitter trash fire didn't stop enough people from signing up to his ISP to hold it back from this milestone.

"Starlink now has more than 1,000,000 active subscribers — thank you to all customers and members of the Starlink team who contributed to this milestone," wrote SpaceX's official Twitter account on Monday.

Though no doubt intended to sound impressive, Starlink's significant subscriber count may not be great news for its existing customers. According to a September report by Ookla, Starlink's median download speeds have dropped year-on-year since 2021's second quarter in every country the internet speed measurement company tracks. (Note: Ookla and Mashable are both owned by the same parent company, Ziff Davis.)

These speed drops ranged from nine to 54 percent, with Ookla noting they may be caused by Starlink's infrastructure buckling under its growing user base. The service already had over 400,000 users in May, while price drops in August may have enticed even more to sign up.

SpaceX also announced in August that it was partnering with T-Mobile to allow customers' mobile phones to connect directly with Starlink satellites, with beta testing to run in late 2023. This will potentially add even more people to Starlink's user base.

The company is likely aware of Starlink's flagging speeds, and appears to have taken steps to mitigate both use and expectation. In the ISP's new fair use policy introduced in November, SpaceX states that customers who exceed certain data limits during their monthly billing cycle will now have their internet speed throttled — that is, deliberately slowed down. Users will then have to pay extra to get their speeds back up.

SpaceX plans to begin launching Starlink's second generation satellites before the end of the year, which may help with the load. It will also no doubt cause even more headaches for astronomers, who are already concerned about the night sky pollution caused by Musk's many satellites. SpaceX currently has over 3,000 satellites in orbit, with plans to launch a total of 42,000. So far 12,000 have been approved.
