Use this language-learning app to speak like a local when you travel

How many times have you struggled to order street food or get public transportation directions while traveling abroad? Even after vowing you'd learn enough of a language to get through your next trip easily, you pretty much did nothing about it. But there's a recently popular method that will help you learn a language with less difficulty and less time, known as Reading-While-Listening or RwL, and that's what Beelinguapp's platform is based on.

Various studies have shown the benefits of RwL, and Beelinguapp is not afraid to use it. This mobile language-learning app utilizes an audiobook approach combined with karaoke-style animation to provide an immersive experience. Original audio is recorded by a native language speaker to help you hear how the words are pronounced as you read them and see how they're spelled and put together in sentences. It shows the same exact text in two languages, side by side, while it reads out loud to you.

Offering 13+ languages, such as Spanish, English, German, Korean, and French, Beelinguapp lets you choose from fairy tales, news, science papers, and novels to learn from, with new content being added every single week. With 4.7 stars in the Google Play Store and 4.6 in Apple's App Store, Beelinguapp must be doing something right! Give it a try and you just might have your best vacation yet.

The virus is highly contagious, and as of Saturday, has infected 85,641 people worldwide and is responsible for 2,933 deaths. Symptoms include fever, cough, and difficulty breathing.

As panic around the virus rises, preventative supplies like face masks and hand sanitizer are becoming increasingly difficult to buy. Your next Android smartphone will probably have more RAM than your PC

Your next Android smartphone will probably have more RAM than your PC

Smartphones are about to overtake PCs when it comes to RAM memory.

On Tuesday, Samsung announced it has begun mass production of the first 16GB LPDDR5 DRAM chip for smartphones.

The new chip is fast, with a data transfer rate that's 1.3 times faster than LPDDR4X RAM, and approximately 20% energy savings compared to an 8GB LPDDR4X chip. Speed aside, 16GB sounds like overkill. Is it?

Smartphones with 16GB of RAM exist already; Samsung's own Galaxy S20 Ultra can be had with this preposterous amount of fast memory. But now that's Samsung producing the 16GB chip en masse, it means that more smartphones will become available with this amount of RAM in the near future.  Read more...

'Glitch' died so Slack could take over offices everywhere, but traces of the game live on

Before Slack became the multibillion-dollar business it is today, it was an oddball multiplayer online game on the brink of financial failure.

The game was called Glitch. It had a loyal but modest following of 150,000 people. Players scavenged for weird items and talked to strange characters. But most importantly, they talked to each other — setting the stage for a work chat app that would grow to host 12 million users and 65 of the Fortune 100 companies.

But Slack employees haven't forgotten its roots, and bits and pieces from its early days as a video game lurk in the app.  Read more...

Escaped baboons go on the run, Twitter goes wild with primate jokes

Escaped baboons go on the run, Twitter goes wild with primate jokes

"Have you heard about the baboons on the loose?"

It's the first question you're likely to be asked around the watercooler today, as three of the primates did indeed take a walk on the wild side in Sydney on Tuesday.

One male and two female baboons escaped from a research facility on the grounds of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in the Sydney suburb of Camperdown, causing everyone including the local police force to monkey around making furiously bad jokes about it.

This is not a Mandrill! Earlier this afternoon, a troop of baboons escaped from a facility and were going bananas in Camperdown. Police and wildlife handlers now have the situation under control, so please let them do their job and don't be tempted to pry, mates.

Alternative milks, ranked by how good they taste in a latte

Alternative milks, ranked by how good they taste in a latte

Like millions of us, I've had a lifelong love affair with the creamy deliciousness that is cow's milk. (Whole milk, please, none of your pointless low-fat nonsense.) It's Saturday cartoons with cereal. It's the perfect partner in crime for sinfully sweet late-night snacks. And, when frothed and combined with two or more shots of espresso, it is pure work fuel. So much so that I measure my mornings by the size of the latte I order or make at home.

But the downside of milk is getting harder to ignore, even for those of us who tolerate lactose like crazy. Dairy and meat industry cattle use 83 percent of the world's farmland; they are the main reason forests are being cut down. The less we use their products, the more that land goes wild again, sucking in billions of tons of carbon. Reform agriculture enough, and climate change is pretty much solved. I'm excited about the rise of fake meat for exactly that reason.  Read more...

'The Invisible Man' gets tripped up in the details

Leigh Whannell's The Invisible Man may not have much in common with its ostensible source material, H.G. Wells' The Invisible Man. But its story should feel familiar all the same.

Elisabeth Moss plays Cecilia, who leaves her abusive husband only to discover she's in more danger than ever before, as Adrian (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) will do anything, up to and including turning himself invisible, to possess her. Worse still, no one around her quite seems to take her concerns seriously; even her well-meaning friends and family believe she's just being paranoid, or imagining things, or becoming unhinged. Ultimate Ears turns the volume to 11 with massive Hyperboom speaker

Ultimate Ears turns the volume to 11 with massive Hyperboom speaker

Looking at Ultimate Ears' wireless speaker lineup, it was inevitable. First there was the Boom, then the Megaboom, followed by the Blast and Megablast (perhaps not exactly in that order, but you get the picture).

So now, the company took this idea a few notches further with its latest portable, wireless speaker: the Hyperboom.

The Hyperboom, dubbed as the brand's "loudest and bassiest speaker yet," is truly massive; I don't have exact size specifications yet, but it's probably a fair amount bigger than your head.

Of course, due to its size, the Hyperboom is more of a party speaker than a home speaker. But big size has advantages, including 24 hours of battery life (the battery can also be used to charge your phone), and a sound that's three times louder an has "six times the bass" (whatever that means) of UE's Megaboom 3.  Read more...

BTS and Jimmy Fallon playing party games is silly, chaotic fun

Monday's episode of the Tonight Show saw K-pop group BTS join Jimmy Fallon for a round of Subway Olympics, playing several games that probably won't appear in the real Olympics any time soon. These included Protect the Duck, in which players attempted to knock a rubber duck off each other's hand, and Dance Your Shades and Gloves Off, which was exactly what it sounds like.

It was predictably chaotic, with J-Hope accidentally slapping Jin in the face at one point, but it wouldn't be BTS playing games without some silly antics. There was even a bit of cheeky cheating, with Jimin sneakily sticking Post-Its on Jungkook well after time was up. Read more...

BTS took over Grand Central Station with Jimmy Fallon and it'll stop you in your tracks

Imagine being powerful enough to take over one of the busiest train stations in America, putting on a performance in a landmark that sees 750,000 passengers a day.

Well, K-pop titans BTS stopped Grand Central Station in its tracks, with a performance in the Manhattan icon's main hall. The biggest boyband in the world right now, BTS threw down a performance to remember, 'On' from their latest album Map of the Soul: 7, released on Friday.

It's all part of Jimmy Fallon's Subway Special of The Tonight Show, which saw the seven lads touring New York's landmarks. It's a big week for BTS doing the late night show rounds, with their run on James Corden's Carpool Karaoke dropping on Tuesday. Read more...

BTS finally explained 'the black bean noodle incident' to Jimmy Fallon

The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon solved a long-running K-pop mystery on Monday, finally revealing the details of BTS' Black Bean Noodle Incident.

The boy group teased the tale last year when RM and Jimin brought it up during a livestream. Though they mentioned wanting to share the story during a future television interview, it went unexplained for eight months, leaving BTS' Army fans desperate for further information

Answering questions Fallon gathered from fans, BTS finally revealed exactly what the mysterious noodle incident was. It seems that, during their training days, BTS' leader RM told the rest of the group he was going to the restroom. However, he actually went to eat black bean noodles alone while everyone else waited for him. "I had a stomach ache!" RM laughed.  Read more...

'If you use pundit math, he was actually losing': Seth Meyers mocks media panic at Sanders' popularity

Bernie Sanders won the Nevada caucus over the weekend, securing his place as the current frontrunner for the Democratic nomination. However, while these results clearly indicate most of the population is behind Bernie, some more centrist Democrats in the media were apparently hoping he wouldn't do so well.

"Pundits across cable news have been freaking out about Bernie's rise," said Late Night host Seth Meyers during Monday's episode. After Bernie's win in New Hampshire, "the story wasn't that he was winning, but that if you use pundit math, he was actually losing."

In this case, "pundit math" referred to the tendency of cable news shows to declare that, if you add together several other candidates' results, Sanders is actually losing. Which, by the way, is not how voting works at all. If two people want to eat at Burger King, two prefer KFC, and three want In-N-Out, that doesn't mean In-N-Out has lost. Read more...

Saying Bernie Sanders 'rejects' climate reality is profoundly foolish

So far in short-lived 2020, Antarctic scientists measured warm waters eating away at the planet's most threatening glacier, Earth experienced its warmest January in over 140 years of record-keeping, and the Australian Navy rescued 1,000 residents trapped by the nation's historic, climate-enhanced fires

Sen. Bernie Sanders has an ambitious, though imperfect, plan to help slash Earth's skyrocketing carbon emissions. President Donald Trump, meanwhile, appointed a non-climate scientist to the National Security Council who incorrectly claimed Earth's plants are in dire need of more CO2, directed his administration to officially leave the world's climate change agreement in November, and got owned by Captain America when he childishly tweeted that the inevitable presence of winter means the planet isn't warming. Best dating sites and apps for people over 40 — and the ones you should avoid

Dating when you're 40 or older can be intimidating — unlike when you're in your 20s or 30s, you can't assume everyone your age is single and looking. If you've found yourself "on the market" again, it's important to remember that half of U.S. marriages do end in divorce, so the dating pool isn't as small as you might think.

Meeting people organically out in public still happens, but sometimes it's easier and less intimidating to meet people where they are. It's a comfort in knowing that the people you find on dating apps are single (hopefully) and looking for a romantic relationship, so at least you're both on the same page. Read more...
